2010 Bordeaux En Primeur Offer
|
|
Another en primeur campaign is upon us and it's a
goodie. From what I've tasted in the last few months
- both in London and Bordeaux - it is clear that it's
one of the goodies: a vintage to rank
alongside the best in history.
|
|
And there is a certain amount of sheepishness
emanating from France at present; the sort of aura of
discomfort one might notice in, say, a presenter on
the Antiques Roadshow who, having just declared on
camera that a particular George I swizzle stick is
quite the finest he has ever seen, suddenly realises
that the next three people in the queue are also
bearing George I swizzle sticks of equal or greater
significance. The reason for these ovine sentiments
is, of course, that 2010's immediate predecessor was
dubbed one of the greatest of all time. Should 2010
be declared greater than the greatest, then?
|
|
The truth of the matter is that in many instances,
when tasting the young wines last year, one found
oneself wondering how it would be possible for wines
at this stage of their development to make more of an
impression. To have those musings so swiftly answered
is uncanny.
|
|
As I understand it, the greatest vintages of Bordeaux
are frequently those in which the vineyards have been
subjected to draught during the growing season. Both
2009 and 2010 comply with this pattern. However,
whilst 2009 was hot and dry, 2010 - at least during
August and September - was cool and dry and it is
this difference that has separated the vintages
stylistically.
|
|
2010 has produced much fresher wines. They are at
least as high in tannin and alcohol as those produced
in the 2009 vintage (itself breaking records in these
departments), yet whilst one finds almost Reubenesque
fruit among the tannin and alcohol of the 2009 wines,
the fruit of the 2010 clarets is chiselled, facetted,
tightly controlled and aristocratic.
|
|
I must now say that I have never encountered such
concentrated, structured, fresh, pure and elegant
wines in Bordeaux. Some are massive, borderline
behemoths. The best are simply beautiful, despite the
weight of their statistics. At the top levels they
will probably outlast every single person alive in
the world today. At every level they will give the
utmost pleasure when mature.

Château Meyney, St Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
Notes: N.B. This is 55% Cab Sauv, 30% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot. Huge depth of colour and a very narrow band at the rim. Very rich nose and a very black one. Hint of something medicinal - mint perhaps - and lots of spice: ginger. Floral notes, as well as something animal and earthy. Entry of the palate is very cool, very supple, of black cherry and plum. Then proper St Estèphe minerals kick in. Tannin is nice and nutty and fine and tacky. Length and grip are good. There's real spice to the finish, which is gravelly and loaded. Fabulous Meyney.

Château Calon-Ségur, St Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
Notes: N.B. This is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon. An opaque black purple colour. Really very floral nose to Calon this vintage. I got pot pourri and violet aromas from it. Then there's the wealth of cassis Cabernet, as well as a hint of the oak. This is cool and offers cassis flavours in the mouth. Minerals and tannins wind right through this, the latter very rich, tacky, upright and integrated. Then comes this lovely, full, serious, structured finish. Add that to the purity of cassis fruit wrapped up in very fresh clothes, append a really beautiful aftertaste and voilà, one is left with an extremely lovely Calon.

Château Capbern Gasqueton, St Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
Notes: N.B. This weighs in at 14%abv. Utterly opaque in the glass. Up the nose it gives a wonderful purity and richness of black cherry, blackcurrant and spice, fresh and ripe. Palate-wise, we are talking about slightly floral, pure blackcurrant fruit. This is nice and cool and straight, then along come furry tannins cached within the fruit. Long and a touch mineral, this. Fresh wine, with the merest hint of warmth at the back.

Château Cos d'Estournel, St Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
Notes: A big nose and a smoky one. Blackcurrant pastilles, flecked by aromas of nut and beef extract. The cool entry quickly gains big, quite dry tannins. There's a hit of cocoa here (the woods presumably) and very high grip. An extracted and highly structured wine and a very, very long one. I didn't find this much fun, but many others did, who didn't like the '09 much: a wine that I really enjoyed. Cannot imagine that this'll be anything other than superb, but I think I'd spend my money on Ducru this vintage…or Montrose or Calon out of the St Estèphes.

Dame de Montrose, St Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
Notes: An opaque black purple. There's a perfumed thing going on here that I found intriguing. Some currant leaf. Otherwise rather closed. Supple and cool on entry. Goes in medium weight then spreads out across the palate. Tacky-fine, high tannins. Very long and it offers fresh grip. Lively. Excellent intent and intensity. Black cherry and plum. Very juicy ending to a tannin-laced finish.

Pagodes de Cos, St Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
Notes: N.B. 65% Cab Sauv; 33% Merlot; 2% Petit Verdot The fruit here is really dark, damson-crunchy and there's that slight hint of prune again, plus a wisp of gingery spice to the blackcurrants. Again, this is very cool, but it is rather more serious than the Goulée (as one would expect). Blackcurrant straightness, nicely pure. Tannins are really quite classically proportioned here: cedary. Fresh drive to the very long finish. Pure. Just medium weight, but a complete wine. Mineral lunch claret.

Château Tronquoy-Lalande, St Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
Notes: Bottled midnight, this sits grumpily in the glass, pressing the sides. Nose is a touch shy, but I found aromas of smoke and tobacco to the meaty, rooty fruit. A cool and really straight wine; mineral, with lovely swelling grip. Long and pure, the tannins are fully cached within the fruit. Fresh and long and impressive.

Notes: N.B. This is 60% Cab Sauv and 40% Merlot. Extraordiunary depth of colour. The nose is all smoky blueberries, with touches of crystallised fruit, violet. A creamy nose,a touch spicy. Concentrated, pure and cool palate. Pure, rich, blackcurrant fruit backed by rich, nutty, chunky-fine tannins. Very straight, with flavours of smoke along its length. A touch marked by the wood at the moment, but there's more than enough fruit concentration to absorb this. Fresh and really pretty serious.

Notes: N.B. This is 50% Cab Sauv, 36% Merlot, 11% Cab Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenère. Really crunchy nose giving aromas of sour cherries and damson skins. Very black nose that takes in liquorice. Then come floral notes. A smooth and cool entry. This is a tangy, piquant wine of high grip. Blueberry and blackcurrant fruit is wholly integrated with the grippy, fine tannins. Lively stuff. I like this a great deal, but, as usual, the style stands out like a sore thumb.

Notes: N.B. This is 60% Cab Sauv, 23% Merlot, 15% Cab Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Really pretty nose this offers. I located floral aspects to the black and berryish aromas. There's a medicinal touch of mint. The palate starts off creamy-rich, but becomes really quite woody later on. Delightful purity here, the fruit buttressed by nutty, velvet tannin. Lovely length and follow-through.

Notes: The nose here is broader than that of the Carruades; altogether more relaxed. Floral touches and the fruit of ripe black plum. Both concentrated and cool, this, once it has gone into the mouth. Rich tannin is really very fine. There's juicy grip to this fresh wine. Lively and reallu rather serious. Hint of apple pip about the phenolics. Persistent grip and the tannin is a touch spicy. Very, very long and lovely Duhart.

Again, I find something of the pot pourri, along with liquorice and a hint of the wood. A cool and creamy and concentrated entry of pure blackcurrant and nut fruit. Then there's a vibrant thrust for the ending. Peppery grip at the end. Really mineral, serious and intense, but with that lovely blackcurrant fruit. Super-cool. Very, very long. Notes: A rich and very black and smoky nose of damson fruit. There are also aromas of dark flowers and chocolate spice. Toasted gingerbread. Backward, with very nutty, angular-but-ripe tannins. Ripe blackcurrants. Mineral. This will be superb, but oof! It's pretty hard work at the moment. Smoky ending.

Château Rauzan-Ségla, Margaux, Bordeaux, France
Notes: As good as is the Rauzan-Gassies, Rauzan-Ségla is absolutely spectacular, perhaps the best I have ever tasted. The nose is a deep pot pourri of complex fruit: crystallised plums, red and black amongst others. The palate is really concentrated and after the first second in the mouth, highly structured. Fabulous rich, nutty tannins. Great intent and verve and lovely, lovely dark fruit. Very mineral and very rich and making a huge statement. Fabulous. Bravo!

Alter Ego de Palmer, Margaux, Bordeaux, France
Notes: N.B. This is 51% Cab Sauv and 49% Merlot. 14.4%abv. Opaque, this presses the sides of the glass. Touch medicinal on the nose and really quite evidently oaky. Plum-fresh and nutty. There's a scent of the soil about this. Palate is cool and a touch creamy, then full of grip, with fine upright, medium tannins. Super-juicy wine. Very long and there's no heat anywhere in this. Really mineral and defined. Big, busy finish. Best AE I have tasted, I think.

Notes: N.B. This is 40% Cab Sauv, 54% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. 14.5%abv. Dense, black and spicy nose. Pepper, black plum and bramble. Coolly creamy entry. Lovely density of blackcurrant and plum fruit. A plush start, the full of rich, very fine mouthcoating tannin. Hint of tobacco to this. A big structured wine and a very long one. Busy, with lovely grip and lift at the end. Serious stuff.

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Margaux, Bordeaux, France
Notes: N.B. This is 66% Cab Sauv, 30% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. 14%abv. Quite a broad and rich nose of spiced plum and blackcurrant. And cool entry and a creamy one, then tacky with nutty tannin. There's some laid-back grip here, that takes one through to a mineral ending. This is a touch warm at the back. Finishes pepperily. Nice purity and nicely long. And really expressing that minerality.

Château Margaux, Margaux, Bordeaux, France
Notes: 90% Cab Sauv, 7% Merlot, 1.5% Petit Verdot and 1.5% Cab Franc. Very deeply coloured wine. Lovely rich and pure and fresh nose of beautifully clean and slightly floral Cabernet fruit. Hint of the wood at the moment. A supple, cool and medium weight entry. This is very controlled and it slowly gains in volume. Knit, the velvet, rich tannins are welded to the fruit. An elegant wine and one with juicy crunch at its ending. Pure, juicy blackcurrant and damson fruit. Subtle grip. Just fabulous Margaux.

Notes: Really very floral notes to the nose here. I found some chocolate wood, as well as beautifully ripe plum fruit. The palate is richly fruited, of smoky damsons and plums. Notes: N.B. This is 23% Merlot, 57% Cab Sauv and 20% Cab Franc. This is more floral yet than the La Mission; a high toned nose of red apple and black cherry. Very, very backward wine. There are extremely serious, tacky, upright tannins from the off. Pretty austere in its youth. Yet this is very long. The shape is exceptional. Dig a hole; throw away the key; whatever you have to do, don't anticipate drinking this anytime soon!

There's a touch of creaminess from the wood, but this is counterpointed very nicely by the clear voice of the minerals. Orangy, with peppery soil at the finish. Really excellent de F white. Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux, Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France
Notes: 13.8%abv. Quite a pungent and herbal nose with hints of lemon and tangerine, orange flowers, roast chicken skin and fennel/angelica notes. Orange zest and a smell of those Thai leaves that used to be called kaffir lime leaves and probably shouldn't. A ripe and rich and concentrated wine and a very mineral one to boot. Minerals come across as pretty dustily textured. Acidity is medium plus and lemon and lime and utterly cached by the fruit concentration, even at the very ending. Long and lemon-fresh, with a really herbal undertow. Lovely stuff.

Château La Chénade, Lalande-de-Pomerol, Bordeaux, France
Notes: N.B. This is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Something rather animal here, Dark spices and cocoa powder. Black cherry and plum fruit. A very cool entry leads onto a landscape of rich, nutty tannins. This is a log wine and one with increasing grip. Juicy stuff. The finish is swathed in well integrated tannin. Something a touch sauvage to the fruit on the finish.
