Broking List 2012

Why ever do people sell wine that they've gone to all the trouble to buy and cellar for years? Have they tried it and found it to be intensely rank? Are the corks full of weevils and the bottles half empty?

Fortunately for us, the answer is most often entirely innocent. Some people simply overshoot and have more wine than they can possibly ever consume (a personal fantasy of mine). Others have found themselves expatriate for far longer than they ever expected and suddenly wake up to find they have tranches of wine coming ready to drink, with no chance of ever enjoying them before decrepitude sets in (personal nightmare). In any event, this offers a chance to buy wine that is often more or less mature, of excellent provenance and quite frequently wine that is unavailable elsewhere. So that's all good news then…

So load up your bargain-detecting software and set your mouse to "extreme click".

2009

Château Berliquet, St Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "The wine displays oodles of strawberry jam intermixed with kirsch, dusty, loamy soil notes, garrigue, spice box and vanillin. It is full-bodied, opulent, very flamboyant and showy, with a hint of chalky minerality to add complexity and precision. It should drink well for up to 15 or more years." Robert Parker in Feb 2012
2012-2027 12x75cl £190.00

2009

Château Teyssier, St Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "The flagship property of Jonathan Maltus (his residence as well), this is the best Teyssier I have ever tasted. A tribute to his efforts, this blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc over-achieves even in a great vintage like 2009. Opaque blue/purple, with notes of charcoal, blackberry, cassis and spring flowers as well as a hint of subtle background oak., the wine is opulent, sumptuously textured, dense, pure and multi-dimensional. It should drink well for at least a decade or more." Robert Parker in February 2012
2012-2022 12x75cl £110.00

2010

Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre, William Fèvre, Chablis, Burgundy, France

Notes: "A wonderfully elegant and highly expressive nose consists of white flower, oyster shell and iodine aromas that are very much in keeping with the powerful yet refined broad-scaled flavors that possess both excellent volume and concentration, all wrapped in an explosive and gorgeously long finish. The combination of punch and civility is most beguiling." Burghound in September 2012
2017-2024 6x75cl £135.00

2010

Chablis Grand Cru Valmur, Patrick Piuze, Chablis, Burgundy, France

Notes: "A ripe and gorgeously complex, clean and dense nose of classic cool green fruit, white flower, lemon and plenty of Chablis character merges seamlessly with intense, mineral-inflected and highly energetic flavors that exude a fine dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine on the immensely long and equally complex finish. Like the Blanchots, this is a textbook, not to mention breathtakingly good, example of a fine Valmur. Buy it." Burghound in October 2011
2017-2026 6x75cl £230.00

2010

Meursault Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Buisson-Charles, Chablis, Burgundy, France

Notes: "A cool, pure and unusually elegant nose of hazelnut, pear and acacia blossom gives way to rich and mouth coating flavors that are blessed with ample amounts of dry extract before culminating in a wonderfully intense and tension-filled finish. There is presently some austerity but it's not aggressive. Lovely and this too is worth your consideration." Burghound in June 2012
2016-2020 12x75cl £230.00

2001

Château Léoville-Lascases*, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Jean-Hubert Delon thinks the 2001 Leoville Las Cases could turn out to be as good as his 2000. I’m not sure I agree, but it may come close. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.5% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2001 (which represents only 40% of the production) reveals notes of sweet vanillin intermixed with pure cassis, black cherries, and lead pencil shavings. Elegant and medium-bodied, it possesses a saturated purple color, high tannin, and a structured, backward feel in the mouth. This quintessentially elegant Las Cases needs another 5-7 years to hit its plateau of maturity. It will be one of the Medoc’s longest lived wines of the vintage." Robert Parker
2011-2030 12x75cl £1,200.00

2003

Château Poujeaux*, Moulis-en-Médoc, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A forward, peppery, black currant-scented perfume emerges from this deep ruby/purple-tinged 2003. With good ripeness, moderate tannin, soft acidity, and a precocious, forward style, it can be enjoyed over the next 10-12 years." Robert Parker
2006-2018 12x75cl £240.00

2004

Bahans Haut Brion*, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "[CS 73%, 22%, CF5%] Rather smudgy and gorgeous on the nose. Some autumnal notes. Very evolved and soft. Easy to drink now but with Haut Brion character in spades. Quite rigorous and gentle. Definite framework but with lots of fruit in the middle. Slightly leafy note." Jancis Robinson
2012-2022 12x75cl £771.00

2004

Château Léoville-Poyferré*, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Along with Leoville Las Cases and a few others, this is among the stars of the appellation. Made in a more floral, supple, Margaux-like style, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 Leoville Poyferre exhibits sweet, broad flavors, and plenty of tannin lurking beneath the surface. However, the abundant cherry, black currant, licorice, and smoke notes obscure the tannic clout. This rich, powerful, broad beauty should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and last for two decades." Robert Parker
2009-2027 12x75cl £654.00

2003

Château La Tour Blanche*, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "So big and round and unctuous. Yet saved by its structure. Beginning, middle and end with a toastiness. Undertow. Great stuff. Enjoy it while you may!" Jancis Robinson in October 2010
2007-2017 12x75cl £303.00

2004

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc*, Clos des Papes, Southern Rhône, France

Notes: "Minerals and something reminiscent of old Hunter Valley whites. Honey underneath and really interesting. Chewy and refreshing. Lot of minerality and spice. Lower acid than 2011. Long. Soyeux." Jancis Robinson in February 2013
2011-2016 12x75cl £618.00

Red Bordeaux

Vintage Wine Drink dates Case size Price
2003

Château Léoville-Lascases†, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "The solidly made 2003 Leoville Las-Cases (13.2% alcohol) is a blend of 70.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17.2% Merlot, and 12.6% Cabernet Franc. In this incredibly hot vintage, the alcohol is slightly lower than achieved in 2002, a cool-climate year. While not a profound example of Las-Cases, the 2003 is muscular, deep, and full-bodied with an impressive ruby/purple color, a tight but juicy bouquet of vanilla, black cherries, crushed rocks, and flowers, a sweet attack, and moderately high tannin. Backward and fresh, displaying impeccable delineation and purity, it can be enjoyed between 2012-2023." Robert Parker
2013-2023 12x75cl £1,215.00

2012-2022 6x75cl £606.00

2007

Château Léoville-Lascases, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Among the more tannic and backward wines of the vintage, the 2007 is another outstanding effort from this estate. Already somewhat closed, it is a candidate for one of the longest lived wines of the vintage. Beautifully pure black currant and black cherry fruit interwoven with notions of cedar and wood are found in this medium to full-bodied, structured, masculine-styled St.-Julien. The attack reveals sweetness and softness, but then the wine shuts down. It will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 15 or more." Robert Parker
2012-2028 12x75cl £921.00

2007

Château La Conseillante, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "This big, juicy, spicy Pomerol exhibits aromas and flavors of mulberries, raspberries, violets, licorice, and a touch of herbs. Made in a medium-bodied, upfront style, this round, seductive wine should drink well for 7-10 years." Robert Parker
2009-2020 6x75cl £270.00

1999

Château Giscours*, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A dense ruby/purple color is followed by seductive aromas of smoky dried herbs and jammy currants, and a rich, dense, layered, velvety-textured wine. The sumptuous attack narrows slightly in the mid-palate and finish, but this is a totally charming, well-balanced, pure beauty to consume over the next 12-15 years." Robert Parker in April 2002
2005-2014 6x150cl £390.00

1999

Château Léoville-Poyferré*, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A perfumed bouquet of flowers, jammy cassis, sweet oak, and truffles jumps from the glass of this ripe, classic, mid-weight claret. The wine is elegant rather than powerful. It possesses intense fruit, admirable ripeness as well as balance, and a long finish. Enjoy this beautiful, sexy Poyferre over the next 12-14 years." Robert Parker in April 2002
2006-2015 6x150cl £639.00

1999

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux*, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "This is an estate where the quality of the second wine is more than a simple afterthought. The 1999 Pavillon Rouge de Margaux exhibits notes of herbs in its elegant, medium-bodied, forward, complex personality. It possesses the character of its big sister, but not the weight, concentration, or length. Enjoy it over the next decade." Robert Parker in April 2002
2004-2014 6x150cl £1,359.00

1999

Bahans Haut Brion, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "The black cherry, plum, and mineral-scented 1999 Bahans Haut Brion was somewhat closed aromatically when I tasted it. The wine has medium body, excellent purity, good texture, and firm tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015." Robert Parker in April 2002
2007-2016 12x75cl £876.00

2000

Château Poujeaux, Moulis-en-Médoc, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A serious red, as one has come to expect from this impeccably run estate, the 2000 Poujeaux exhibits a dense ruby/purple color, a sweet nose of black currants, minerals, and earth, excellent texture, impressive purity, and a long, concentrated, moderately tannic finish. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2016+." Robert Parker in April 2003
2005-2016 12x75cl £300.00

2000

Château Brane-Cantenac, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A serious red, as one has come to expect from this impeccably run estate, the 2000 Poujeaux exhibits a dense ruby/purple color, a sweet nose of black currants, minerals, and earth, excellent texture, impressive purity, and a long, concentrated, moderately tannic finish. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2016+." Robert Parker in June 2010
2010-2025 12x75cl £600.00

2000

Château du Tertre*, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A dense purple color is followed by layers of concentrated blackberry fruit intertwined with damp earth, mushroom, and sweet, toasty barrique smells. With ripe tannin, medium to full body, a layered texture, and a concentrated, impressively endowed finish, this is the finest Du Tertre since their 1979. This is a property on the move ... up! Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018." Robert Parker in April 2003
2006-2020 6x150cl £510.00

2000

Château Haut Bages Libéral*, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "One of the best examples I have recently tasted from this estate, the saturated blue/purple Haut-Bages Liberal offers up notes of incense, licorice, pepper, and cassis. In the mouth, it is fat, juicy, with a certain succulence, low acidity, and ripe tannin. This may be the best wine produced by this estate in many a year. In spite of its precocious showing in my tastings, the wine actually needs 2-3 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018." Robert Parker in April 2003
2007-2020 6x150cl £402.00

2000

Château Cros Figeac*, St Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Possibly the finest Cros Figeac I have ever tasted, the dense purple-colored 2000 possesses copious quantities of black fruits intermixed with new saddle leather, dried herbs, and spice. Medium-bodied and tasty, it will have 10-12 years of aging potential. It is a sleeper of the vintage." Robert Parker in April 2003
2005-2017 6x150cl £279.00

2002

Château Haut Bages Libéral, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Sweet and a little jagged with some bone dry, leafy elements. Very dry end. Serious stuff with a hint of buckwheat. " Jancis Robinson in November 2009
2010-2017 12x75cl £210.00

2002

Château La Ferrière*, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: Deep purple Nice, easy, spicy black currant nose. Ripe and a touch floral Medium weight, cool, with good concentration of both fruit and structure. Very tannic, but ripely, albeit firmly, so. Long and bristling with intensity - Caspar's original primeur note
2008-2015 12x75cl £315.00

2002

Château Lynch-Bages*, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Bright ruby-red. Pungent, high-toned aromas of raw berries, graphite and licorice, with a suggestion of eucalyptus. Then cool and bright in the mouth, but with a surprisingly plush texture considering the wine's herbal elements. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins that call for four or five years of further aging. Solidly built, classic Lynch-Bages." wineaccess.com
2010-2017 12x75cl £891.00

2003

Château Lascombes*, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "In less than five years this property has emerged as one of the appellation’s up and coming stars thanks to the infusion of money from the American conglomerate, Colony Capital, as well as the braintrust that now oversees the winemaking, Yves Vatelot (of Reignac fame) and the internationally renowned oenologist, Michel Rolland. The dark plum/ruby-hued, open-knit 2003 offers a big, sweet nose of barbecue smoke, plum liqueur, creme de cassis, flowers, new saddle leather, and damp earth. Loads of black fruits, a full-bodied palate impression, low acidity, and a savory, expansive mouthfeel suggest it can be drunk in 2-3 years, or cellared for 15+." Robert Parker in April 2006
2008-2021 12x75cl £600.00

2005

Château Rauzan-Gassies*, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

2014-2030 12x75cl £372.00

2000

Château Brane-Cantenac*†, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Fully mature and very attractive, the 2000 Brane Cantenac, which started a succession of brilliant wines from this famous estate in the Margaux appellation, has a dark plum/ruby/purple color, a sweet, juicy nose of blue, red, and black fruits, and a hint of damp earth as well as subtle herbs. Spicy, round, complex, very lush, and at its plateau of maturity, this wine should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years at minimum. This is Margaux elegance and silkiness at its very best." Robert Parker in June 2010
2010-2025 12x75cl £725.00

2000

Château Cantenac-Brown*†, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Among the finest Cantenac-Browns of the last three decades, the saturated purple-colored 2000 is a sleeper of the vintage. Loaded with chocolatey black currants intermixed with sweet earth, cedar, and spice box, it exhibits medium to full body, surprisingly ripe tannin for a wine from this estate, a multi-layered texture as well as mid-palate, and a finish that lasts 25-30 seconds." Robert Parker in April 2003
2006-2301 12x75cl £582.00

2000

Château du Tertre*†, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A dense purple color is followed by layers of concentrated blackberry fruit intertwined with damp earth, mushroom, and sweet, toasty barrique smells. With ripe tannin, medium to full body, a layered texture, and a concentrated, impressively endowed finish, this is the finest Du Tertre since their 1979. This is a property on the move ... up!" Robert Parker in April 2003
2004-2018 12x75cl £510.00

2000

Château Ferrière*†, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A strong showing for this estate, which has been a perennial underachiever, the 2000 Ferriere exhibits a sweet cherry, black currant, leafy tobacco, and damp earth-scented bouquet. Medium-bodied, with ripe tannin, very good to excellent concentration, and a velvety finish, this charming, stylish effort will be at its best between 2006-2015. Bravo!" Robert Parker in April 2003
2006-2015 12x75cl £380.00

2000

Château Gruaud-Larose*†, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A very strong effort for Gruaud Larose, possibly eclipsed by what they have done in 2009, this is a pure, full-bodied Gruaud Larose with plenty of new saddle leather, cedar wood, black currants, cherries, licorice, and Provencal herbs. Spicy, earthy, full-bodied, and rich, it has hit its plateau of full maturity, where it should stay for another 20 or more years." Robert Parker in June 2010
2010-2030 12x75cl £990.00

2000

Château Lascombes*†, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "The first of a succession of brilliant wines that have emerged from this previously moribund estate over the last decade, the fully mature 2000 Lascombes is an outstanding effort. Notes of cedarwood, roasted herbs, incense, black cherries, and currants emerge from this medium-bodied, evolved Margaux. Consume it over the next 7-8 years." Robert Parker in June 2010
2010-2018 12x75cl £782.00

2000

Château Léoville-Barton*†, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Dark crimson. Very solid and savoury on the nose. Essence of St James's Street?! Lots of mass here and something really very promising even if it is far from its full realisation. Bravo!" Jancis Robinson in March 2010
2015-2035 6x75cl £625.00

2000

Château Rauzan-Ségla*†, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Perfumed, classy aromas of dark berries, spices, licorice and bitter chocolate; a real essence of Margaux. Rich but sappy, with cassis, blackberry, boysenberry and dark chocolate flavors nicely firmed by ripe acidity. Finishes long and firmly tannic, with excellent spine and grip." wineaccess.com
2011-2025 6x75cl £445.00

2001

Château Brane-Cantenac†, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Mid crimson. Quite intense, concentrated nose. Sweet start and very polished. A little chewy on the end but certainly very Margaux. More polished than the Poujeaux." Jancis Robinson in March 2011
2010-2024 12x75cl £530.00

2001

Château l'Evangile†, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "While not up to the quality level of the stratospheric 2000, the deep ruby/purple-colored 2001 l’Evangile is a beauty. Revealing notes of beef blood, black fruits, and white flowers, it is medium-bodied and lush with sweet tannin, a pliant, opulent texture, and a long, rich finish revealing hints of forest floor, truffles, and licorice." Robert Parker in June 2004
2006-2017 12x75cl £1,070.00

1996

Château Léoville-Barton*, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "This impressive wine is a classic. Although backward, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to abundant black currant fruit intertwined with spicy oak and truffle-like scents. The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. It should turn out to be a long-lived Leoville Barton, and somewhat of a sleeper. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030." Robert Parker
2010-2030 12x75cl £1,173.00

2004

Château Lynch-Bages†, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Fully saturated inky ruby. Captivating nose offers redcurrant, black cherry, tar, tobacco, graphite and cedar aromas. Sweet, lush and ripe, with pure blackberry, cocoa and coffee flavors accented by a hint of shoe polish. Very good balance and sound acidity keeps this light on its feet. Finishes a bit warm and simple, with average length but good texture for the vintage. An excellent example of how good some of the 2004 Bordeaux can be: this would make an excellent wine-by-the-glass choice in a restaurant, or could be enjoyed now and over the next few years while your 2005s and 2006s mature in the cellar." wineaccess.com
2001-2026 12x75cl £951.00

2001

Château d'Angludet*, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A sleeper of the vintage, this excellent offering possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of melted asphalt, cedar wood, black currants, gravel, and tar. There is plenty of well-integrated tannin along with surprising size, richness, and aging potential (particularly for a Cru Bourgeois). Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015." Robert Parker
2010-2016 12x75cl £351.00

2003

Château Cos d'Estournel, St Estèphe, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "The prodigious, fantastic 2003 Cos d’Estournel is a candidate for “wine of the vintage.” A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon (unusually high for this chateau), 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, 17,500 cases were produced from low yields. An inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a compelling perfume of black fruits, subtle smoke, pain grille, incense, and flowers. With extraordinary richness, full body, and remarkable freshness, elegance, and persistence, this is one of the finest wines ever made by this estate. The good news is that it will be drinkable at a young age yet evolve for three decades or more. Kudos to winemaker Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier." Robert Parker in April 2006
2006-2036 6x75cl £750.00

2003

Château Léoville-Barton, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "One cannot admire enough proprietor Anthony Barton and his classic, potentially long-lived wines that are models of power, elegance, and longevity – in short, these wines symbolize what makes Bordeaux so world-renowned! Probably capable of rivaling the 2000, the uncompromisingly made, formidably powerful, masculine, and highly extracted 2003 has an inky purple color to the rim, a big, deep personality with a tight but promising nose of forest floor, creme de cassis, smoke, charcoal, licorice, and perhaps even truffle. It is layered, rich, and set for an exceptionally long life, but don’t expect to get a lot of joy even in this somewhat overtly styled vintage for at least another 7-8 years." Robert Parker April 2006
2012-2030 12x75cl £1,380.00

2005

Château Berliquet, St Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Luscious depth of crimson. Really rather sumptuous and polished. Not too heavy or dry." Jancis Robinson in August 2009
2011-2017 12x75cl £273.00

2005

Château Cantenac-Brown, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Very dark. Pretty ripe – borderline brett. Very sweet, black cherry aromas but fleshy and hedonistic with the tannins reasonably mature and fresh. Good wine in modern idiom." Jancis Robinson in August 2009
2014-2024 12x75cl £375.00

2005

Château Gruaud-Larose, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Good red-ruby. Redcurrant, leather and game on the expressive if slightly rustic nose. Sweet and concentrated but a bit youthfully aggressive, and not showing the refinement or definition of the 2006. Strong nutty oak component. Finishes with substantial tannins that are a bit richer and more fully buffered by the wine's middle-palate material than those of the 2006. It will be interesting to compare these two vintages (1990 being the other) in ten years or so." wineaccess.com
2011-2022 12x75cl £450.00

1995

Château Figeac*°, St Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Deep garnet colour. Complex nose of warm blackberry, hung meat, tobacco, cloves and cinnamon. The medium bodied palate is elegantly styled and well balanced with medium acidity and soft, silky tannins. Still plenty of ripe, rich, dark berry fruit complimented by a suggestion of truffles. Long finish." erobertparker.com in May 2009
2009-2012 12x75cl £1,093.00

1994

Château Lafite*°, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes:
2010-2030 12x75cl £7,011.00

1994

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou*°, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Ducru-Beaucaillou experienced an uncharacteristically shaky period between 1986 and 1990. The winemaking did not suffer, but the inconsistency from bottle to bottle (too many wines exhibited a musty, wet cardboard-like aroma), is history. The construction of a new cellar and replacement of every barrel has guaranteed the conditions necessary to produce trouble free wines. Ducru is on a roll, with fine efforts over recent vintages, including an exceptional 1994, spectacular 1995, and what looks to be an equally profound, super-concentrated 1996. A top-notch effort in this vintage, Ducru-Beaucaillou's 1994 displays a dark purple color, a textbook, cassis, mineral, licorice, and floral-scented nose, medium body, outstanding extract and purity, moderate tannin, and a persuasively rich, sweet, spicy finish. Everything is well-integrated (including the tannin). This should prove to be a classic St.-Julien." Robert Parker in February 1997
2004-2022 12x75cl £927.00

1996

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou*°, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "I tasted the 1996 Ducru Beaucaillou on four separate occasions from bottle in January. The 1996 is long, with a deep mid-palate. It also reveals tannin in the finish. This wine is remarkable. It is muscular, concentrated, and classic. Bottled in late June, 1998, it exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a knock-out nose of minerals, licorice, cassis, and an unmistakable lead pencil smell that I often associate with top vintages of Lafite-Rothschild. It is sweet and full-bodied, yet unbelievably rich with no sense of heaviness or flabbiness. The wine possesses high tannin, but it is extremely ripe, and the sweetness of the black currant, spice-tinged Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is pronounced. This profound, backward Ducru-Beaucaillou is a must purchase. It will be fascinating for readers who own the 1996 to follow the evolution of this exceptional vintage." Robert Parker in April 1999

1997

Château Léoville-Barton*°, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Medium-dark red. Roasted plum, leather and nuts on the nose, plus a slight vegetal nuance. Soft, lush and somewhat gamey in the mouth. Finishes with a hint of green acidity but nicely ripe tannins. Not short." wineaccess.com
2000-2012 12x75cl £582.00

1997

Château Latour*°, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A flavorful, savory Latour, without a great deal of density or power, the 1997 exhibits sweet, walnut-tinged, black currant fruit intertwined with minerals and subtle wood. Nicely-textured, with adequate acidity, ripe tannin, and a medium-bodied finish, this smooth effort should drink well for 12-14 years." Robert Parker in April 2000
2000-2014 12x75cl £4,455.00

1997

Château Haut-Brion *°, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Mid ruby with a rust-coloured rim. Vigorous attack with, again, marked acidity on the palate but it also opened out very winningly, especially with food. Dry finish but overall a very graceful wine – a lovely, welcoming bottle already quite evolved." Jancis Robinson in October 2007
2006-2016 12x75cl £3,267.00

1998

Château Lynch-Bages, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Big and beefy and still very young and even quite raw. Still quite chewy. By no means the most delicious wine here even if it is the most recognisable and valuable! A bit jagged in terms of acidity." Jancis Robinson in December 2009
2010-2020 12x75cl £1,043.00

1998

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou*°, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A supremely elegant, dense purple-colored effort, the 1998 reveals aromas of cassis, black raspberries, minerals, and currants. Precise, well-delineated, and medium to full-bodied, with magnificent purity and understated elegance, this noble, restrained wine reveals a tannic finish, suggesting 4-5 more years of cellaring is warranted." Robert Parker in April 2001
2005-2025 12x75cl £1,064.00

1998

Château Latour*°, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Minerals and savour and sappiness. Certainly nothing as simple as fruit! Although in this vintage Latour does not outshine the others as obviously as in some more recent years. Really sappy perfume. Great rich spread across the palate is impressive. Density and energy. Dry finish. Good lift. Suitably dense and very mineral. But polished too." Jancis Robinson in April 2008
2013-2028 12x75cl £4,203.00

1998

Château Gruaud-Larose*°, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Gruaud-Larose has fashioned an elegant, less rustic wine than previous vintages. The color is a healthy dark ruby/purple. The bouquet offers aromas of plums, black raspberries, and cassis. Stylish, with medium to full body, sweet tannin, and excellent purity as well as overall symmetry, it will drink well between 2004-2016." Robert Parker in April 2001
2004-2016 12x75cl £668.00

1998

Château La Gomerie*°, St Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A spectacular effort, this blockbuster, in-your-face St.-Emilion boasts a saturated purple color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of framboise liqueur, blackberries, and smoky oak, an unctuous texture, full body, and a seamless finish with low acidity and ripe tannin. This 1998 scores high on both pleasure and cerebral meters. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2014. A garage wine, this 100% Merlot cuvee is produced from a 6.5-acre vineyard. One hundred percent new oak is utilized, and malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel. Approximately 9,000 bottles are produced in an abundant vintage." Robert Parker in Aopril 2001

2000

Château Rauzan-Ségla*°, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "While the bottled 2000 still reveals a certain sternness in addition to tough tannin, it is sweeter and more expansive and flavorful. The dark ruby/purple color is saturated and impressive. With coaxing, notes of lead pencil shavings, black currants, earth, cedar, and spice box emerge from a relatively closed, firm, medium to full-bodied wine or, as the French would say, a classic vin de garde (for long-term cellaring). Although austere, it is a classic, authoritatively flavored effort that requires patience. I would like to see sweeter tannin and more flesh built into the mid-palate, but there is no denying the classicism and purity of this 2000." Robert Parker in April 2003
2010-2025 12x75cl £885.00

2000

Château Lynch-Bages*°, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Beginning to open magnificently, the still dense purple-colored 2000 reveals a blossoming bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite and pen ink. Full-bodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. One of the all-time great examples of Lynch Bages, the 2000 is just beginning to drink well yet promises to last for another 20-25+ years." Robert Parker in August 2011
2000-2036 6x75cl £1,058.00

2000

Château Léoville-Barton *°, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "I found this to be one of the more backward wines of the 2000 vintage and gave it a window of maturity of 2015-2040 when I reviewed it in 2003. In my two recent tastings of it, I changed that window to 2018-2050, which probably says more than the following tasting note could say. This is a behemoth – dense, highly extracted, very tannic, broodingly backward, with a dense purple color and very little evolution since it was bottled 8 years ago. Wonderfully sweet cedar and fruitcake notes are intermixed with hints of creme de cassis, licorice, and earthy forest floor. It is full-bodied and tannic, with everything in place, but like so many wines that come from Leoville Barton, it makes a mockery of many modern-day consumers wanting a wine for immediate gratification. Those who bought it should continue to exercise patience and be proud to own a wonderful classic with five decades of longevity ahead of it." Robert Parker in June 2010
2018-2050 6x75cl £590.00

2000

Château Pichon-Lalande*°, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Sitting next to my former colleague, Pierre Antoine Rovani, at one of the tastings, he commented that he didn’t like the striking green note in the aromatics of this wine, which I didn’t detect at all, and a subsequent bottle at another tasting did not reveal it either. I do think there is a hint of bay leaf and a meatiness to it. In short, I find this to be a spectacular Pichon Lalande. Dense purple in color, with loads of coffee, mocha, creme de cassis, and chocolate notes, this is a somewhat unusual blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and a whooping 10% Petit Verdot, with a little bit of Cabernet Franc. The Petit Verdot certainly gives the wine more of a tapenade, floral note, which I think can be interpreted by some as herbal. This is a rich, opulent, stunning Pichon Lalande that is beginning to drink beautifully, yet should continue to improve for at least another 10-15 years and last 30 or more years." Robert Parker in June 2010
2020-2050 6x75cl £1,036.00

2000

Château Margaux*°, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Absolutely compelling in two tastings of this vintage, the 2000 Margaux is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The extraordinary seductiveness, complex aromatics, and purity it exhibits lead me to believe it has reached its window of full maturity. Medium-bodied, with layers of concentration, stunning blue, red, and black fruits intermixed with spring flowers, a subtle dosage of new oak, and a distinctive personality that is elegant while at the same time powerful and substantial, this is a multi-dimensional wine that was extremely approachable and drinkable in both tastings I had of it. The color remains a healthy, even opaque bluish/purple, but there is no reason to hesitate to drink it. It should evolve for another 30-40 years, so there is no hurry either." Robert Parker in June 2010
2016-2030 6x75cl £4,442.00

2004

Pagodes de Cos, St Estèphe, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Cos d’Estournel’s second wine has ratcheted up its quality. The crisp 2004 Les Pagodes de Cos offers notes of crushed rocks, flowers, and red as well as black fruits in a medium-bodied, streamlined, feminine style. Drink it over the next decade." Robert Parker
2006-2016 12x75cl £297.00

2005

Château d'Armailhac, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "This powerful, tannic, structured effort from Mouton-Rothschild’s stable is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by an earthy nose dominated by black currants and toasty, smoky oak. Medium to full-bodied with relatively high tannin, decent acidity, and a fine finish, it should be at its best between 2014-2030." Robert Parker
2014-2030 12x75cl £348.00

2002

Château La Ferrière, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: Deep purple Nice, easy, spicy black currant nose. Ripe and a touch floral Medium weight, cool, with good concentration of both fruit and structure. Very tannic, but ripely, albeit firmly, so. Long and bristling with intensity - Caspar's original primeur note, taken in April 2003
2008-2015 12x75cl £276.00

2003

Château Pape-Clément, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Named after the first French pope, this brilliant 75-acre estate located just south of the beltway surrounding the city of Bordeaux is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Produced from yields of 25 hectoliters per hectare, the 2003 is evolved (part of its extraordinary appeal). Complex characteristics of smoke, meat, lead pencil shavings, sweet plums, black cherry liqueur, blackberries, and a hint of espresso are followed by an opulent, full-bodied wine with moderately high but silky tannin, a layered texture, and copious glycerin, which gives it a big, savory, expansive mouthfeel. The finish is long and persistent. This example appears to be on a fast evolutionary track, but it will probably never close down, and should last 15-20 years ... at the minimum." Robert Parker in April 2006
2006-2026 12x75cl £788.00

2006

Château Bouscaut, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Black, rich and spicy nose of plum fruit. A creamy nose. This is rich and richly, ripely, chunkily tannic; long and grippy. Medium plus acidity, very fresh. Touch warm at the end, but I really like this." Caspar's original tasting note in April 2007
2012-2020 12x75cl £225.00

2007

Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Do not ignore this little gem! The nose is quite forward with lime flower, a touch of fresh pear and citrus lemon. Good definition with granite aromas emerge. The palate is very well balanced, nice sense of tension and clarity, more prudent with the oak allowing the terroir to show through on the stony finish." erobertparker.com in Jan 2009
2010-2018 12x75cl £289.00

1996

Château Lascombes†*, Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Exotic aromas of blackberry, tangerine and Indian spice. Full-bodied, silky and refined. Gorgeous. Little short." The Wine Spectator
2006-2014 12x75cl £652.57

2000

Clos du Marquis†, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "One of the great sleepers of the vintage and probably the best Clos de Marquis I have ever tasted, this wine could easily compete with many of the vintage's classified growths. Dense, opaque purple-colored, with creme de cassis, vanilla, and cherry notes, medium to full body, an unctuous texture, low acidity, and a more evolved style than its bigger sibling, Leoville Las Cases, this dense, chewy, remarkably concentrated and stylish wine should be at its best between 2005 and 2018." Robert Parker in April 2003
2005-2018 12x75cl £450.00

2000

Château Beau-Séjour-Bécot, St Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "This full-bodied, modern-styled St.-Emilion offers a sensational perfume of smoky barbecue, jammy black currants, kirsch, licorice, and a touch of pain grille. Fleshy, savory, and full-bodied, it has shed much of its tannin, but still possesses abundant structure. It is an intense, modern-styled, mouthfilling, sumptuous, attention-getting wine to drink over the next decade." Robert Parker in June 2010
2010-2020 12x75cl £522.00

2005

Château Gruaud Larose, St Julien, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Tasted on three separate occasions, this cuvee exhibits a dark ruby color (with much less saturation than many wines of the vintage) as well as a distinctive, herbal, meaty, horsey nose, medium to full body, good depth, power, and richness, and soft tannins. The wine’s rustic aromas and earthy style are intriguing and provocative. While an excellent effort, the 2005 Gruaud Larose is not one of the stars of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2022." Robert Parker in April 2008
2011-2022 12x75cl £414.00

2005

Bahans Haut Brion, Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "The second wine, the 2005 Bahans-Haut-Brion, is a fruit-forward, deliciously soft, round, stylish offering possessing hints of figs, plums, black currants, cherries, and minerals. Soft, with supple tannin, it is ideal for drinking over the next 12-15 years. By the way, in 2007, this cuvee’s name will be changed to Le Clarence de Haut-Brion." Robert Parker in April 2008
2008-2023 12x75cl £561.00

1996

Château Chasse-Spleen, Moulis-en-Médoc, Bordeaux, France

2005-2016 12x75cl £297.00

1994

Château Pichon Lalande*†, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: One of the stars of the vintage, this opaque purple-coloured wine possesses a gorgeously perfumed, exotic, smoky, blackcurrant, asian spice, and sweet vanillin-scented bouquet.  It is followed by thick, rich, moderately tannic flavours that exhibit medium to full body, good structure, outstanding purity, and a classically layered, long, pure finish.  This terrific Pichon-Lalande should evolve effortlessly for 18-20 years.  Anticipating Maturity: 2001-2020.  Robert Parker
2001-2020 12x75cl £990.00

1995

Clos Fourtet*†, St Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Notes: A very fine effort from Clos Fourtet, the 1995 exhibits a medium dark plum colour, followed by sweet black cherry and kirsch fruit intertwined with minerals and toasty oak.  tightly wound on the palate, with medium body, excellent delineation and purity, and a spicy finish with plenty of grip, this example has closed down considerably since bottling, but it does possess excellent sweetness and depth.  However, the tannin is more elevated, so this 1995 will require patience.  Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.  Robert Parker
2004-2018 12x75cl £540.00

1997

Château Guiraud*, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "The medium gold-colored 1997 Guiraud exhibits a fat, foursquare personality with copious quantities of orange marmalade, melted butter, and lychee nut notes. Buttered white corn flavors make an appearance in this corpulent, full-bodied, unctuously-textured wine. It is a mouth-filling, well-endowed, hefty style of Sauternes." Robert Parker in April 2000

1998

Château Rieussec*, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Much more evolved than the Climens 1998 on the nose. Another big, bold statement but with more mineral and fewer fruity notes in it than the Climens. Round and charming already with very supple ripeness and real power. Not the sweetest Sauternes; I could imagine this with foie gras." Jancis Robinson in July 2004
2004-2018 12x75cl £360.00

1998

Château Climens*, Barsac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "Relatively pale still. Very exotic tropical fruit notes on the nose! Really hits you between the eyes. Very opulent sweetness and just a hint of oak still. Toasted stuff – something almost New World about it – not that I have experienced a sweet Semillon this fine and complex from outside Bordeaux… Big yet satin-textured. Hint of liquorice. Very round with a burnt note on the finish. I am marking this down just because it is not ‘classic’ but it should give enormous pleasure and may well be the (sweet white bordeaux) wine of the vintage." Jancis Robinson in July 2004

1999

Château d'Yquem*, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "And finally a particularly forward vintage of this superlative wine which showed all the richness and concentration that Yquem can muster even if not much nerve or tension. 2001

Château Suduiraut*, Sauternes, Bordeaux, France

2003

Château Coutet*, Barsac, Bordeaux, France

Notes: "A light lemony nose with a touch of coconut. Good definition, quite restrained. Exceptional. Tasted May 2004." erobertparker.com

Sharply focused, graceful and extremely youthful. Very long, subtle aftertaste features terrific grip. Finishes with notes of spicy oak and butterscotch. It possesses low acidity (in flavor, but not in terms of analyses), and a long, 40-second finish. This superb 1997 exhibits considerable botrytis, as well as a thick, unctuously-textured style." Notes: "This evidences a restrained but complex nose of dense red berry fruit trimmed in earth and wet stone nuances, both of which can also be found on the concentrated, naturally sweet and delicious medium-bodied flavors that display firm but not aggressive tannins and excellent length. I very much like the underlying sense of tension as well as the fine minerality. A terrific villages." Burghound

2008

Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau, Jean Grivot, Burgundy, France

Notes: "An airy, cool and high-toned nose features primarily red berry fruit and stone aromas where the latter element extends to the detailed, racy and focused middle weight flavors that possess fine balance and drive if only moderate concentration." Burghound
2014-2022 12x75cl £276.00

2003

Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets, Marquis d'Angerville, Burgundy, France

White Burgundy

Vintage Wine Drink dates Case size Price
2008

Meursault 1er Cru Les Bouchères*, Domaine Buisson-Charles, Burgundy, France

Notes: "As elegant as the Goutte d’Or is, the Bouchères goes it one better with its mélange of white peach, spiced pear and dried rose petal aromas that slide gracefully into precise yet quite densely textured flavors that brim with dry extract and superb length. This is an explosive wine that finishes bone dry and manages to combine impressive power with balance and focus. I actually prefer the delivery of this to the Goutte d’Or but at present at least, it doesn’t quite have the same degree of complexity. A qualitative choice but both are worth considering." Burghound in 2010
2016-2025 12x75cl £510.00

2008

St Aubin 1er Cru En Monceau*, Marc Colin, Burgundy, France

Notes: "Here too there are background notes of sulfur that should be integrated in time. Otherwise the fresh and layered nose features aromas of pear, white peach and a hint of toast that carries over to the impressively rich and generous medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent volume and a seductively textured finish." Burghound in 2010
2013-2021 12x75cl £252.00

2004

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Bonneau du Martray, Burgundy, France

Notes: "A reserved yet elegant nose of white flower| green apple| pear and natural spice and wet stone notes that introduce detailed| fresh and wonderfully intense flavors that are exceptionally clean and bright| culminating in a bone dry finish replete with superb minerality. This is not as dense as the '05 but the purity here is really something to see and as noted last year| it's sufficiently structured that it will need the better part of a decade to reach its apogee. Note that there was a trace of reduction on the nose and this would benefit from 30 minutes in a decanter should you elect to try one." Burghound
2012-2020 12x75cl £656.00

2008

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Remi Rollin, Burgundy, France

Notes: "A complex and highly layered nose features notes of straw, spiced pear, green apple and wet stone, all of which is trimmed in soft oak. The rich, full and powerful big-bodied flavors brim with an intense minerality that continues on through the driving and muscular finish that stains the palate with extract. This should be quite good in time." Burghound
2016-2025 6x75cl £282.00

2008

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières, Bachelet-Monnot, Burgundy, France

Notes: "A gentle touch of wood spice and vanilla sets off intense citrus blossom aromas where an equally intense, indeed almost aggressive lemon rind character can be found on the detailed, crisp, almost Chablis-like middle weight flavors that culminate in a tension-filled, bone dry and persistent finish. This evidences a very firm and prominent acid spine and while the finish does not come across as green, it will undoubtedly strike some as overly dry and perhaps even unduly assertive. I like the "take no prisoners" style but it's not for everyone and even those enjoy ultra dry finishes will have to be patient until this fleshes out." Burghound
2014-2022 12x75cl £447.00

2008

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles, Morey-Coffinet, Burgundy, France

Notes: "There's delightful, pure melon fruit to be found here, plus floral notes. This is one rich and pure nose and it's nutty with it. The palate comes across as cool, concentrated and direct. The fruit is quite aloof, the minerals grainy, the whole thing leading through to juicy freshness at the back of the palate. There is some hint of the wood in the mouth. Spicy/peppery and dead straight, this. Mouthcoating and powerful Puligny." Caspar's note, taken at the domaine
2013-2018 12x75cl £363.00

2005

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru les Folatières, Michelot Mère et Fille, Burgundy, France

Notes: "There's already great complexity on the nose of this wine: a sure sign of its inherent quality. There are glacé aromas of lemon, pear, chamomile and some dried yellow fruits. The palate is utterly sumptuous and rich, a kind of cordial of lime and dried fruits and easy minerals. Beneath the fruit is barely medium acidity leading to real intensity at the end. This is fine wine, without a doubt." Bowes Wine note
2010-2017 12x75cl £561.00

2005

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers, Guy Amiot, Burgundy, France

Notes: "Obvious wood sets off the fresh and bright chardonnay fruit aromas that dissolve into textured, indeed almost chewy, medium weight plus flavors that are both delicious and carry obvious cool mineral nuances on the punchy finish. This possesses the best underlying material to this point." Burghound in July 2007
2010-2016 12x75cl £330.00

2005

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Château de Corton-André, Burgundy, France

Notes: "Corton-Charlemagne should always be mineral in a steely sort of a way and with one sniff of this one realises that one is bang on target. The aromas are mineral and there is meaty, pear fruit. In the mouth, this is rich and full of a fierce energy. The fruit is all lemon and pear, with big, mineral punch. Real cool composure here and this is really intense at the back. Something of a classic, indeed. Brilliant white wine." Bowes Wine note

Vacquéras Vieilles Vignes, Domaine le Couroulu, Southern Rhône, France

Notes: "...quite dark; fairly graceful black fruit aroma, with a little violet and baked stones. Firm black fruit on palate, but is rather austere. Rather dry end tannins, with a cooked fruit, raisin, tar aftertaste. Try in 2009 and hope it integrates the tannins and softens..." John Livingstone-Learmonth
2008-2014 12x75cl £87.00

1998

Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert*°, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Northern Rhône, France

Notes: "dark; overtly ripe harvest aroma, a leathery aspect also. Opulent, fleshy, ripe fruit flavour, cooked texture on it. More overt warmth than the 1999. Very soaked, luscious wine." John Livingstone-Learmonth
2007-2012 12x75cl £236.00

1998

Côte-Rôtie Les Bécasses*°, Chapoutier, Northern Rhône, France

Notes: "The impressive, dark ruby/purple-colored 1998 Cote Rotie Les Becasses offers aromas of black olives, smoke, bacon fat, and cassis. This medium-bodied, fresh, tart but concentrated Cote Rotie can be drunk now as well as over the next 10-12 years." Robert Parker in February 2001
2001-2012 6x75cl £212.00

1998

Hermitage La Chapelle*°, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Northern Rhône, France

Notes: "The outstanding, elegant 1998 Hermitage La Chapelle's dark plum/purple color is followed by scents of new saddle leather, black currants, blackberries, and underbrush. In the mouth, the wine reveals sweet tannin, medium to full body, excellent depth, and an intriguing smokiness." Robert Parker in February 2001
2006-2030 6x75cl £356.00

1999

Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert*°, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Northern Rhône, France

Notes: "very dark; full, grapey ripe bouquet, interesting potential; good weight, a soaked texture on the palate, decent tannins in support. Quite strong extract wine, risk that it is stretched." John Livingstone-Learmonth
2005-2014 12x75cl £229.00

1999

Hermitage La Chapelle*°, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Northern Rhône, France

Notes: "dark plum core to robe, red at top. Brewed, smoky toasted nose - coffee/mocha, warm cooked stone fruit, deep/varied. Assertive, dry-toned texture with warm centre. Southern tones - raspberry fruit with good underlay. Some richness, oil at end. Upright at this stage, likeable punch. More prune flavour with air. Reminds me of 1960s-1970s Chapelles. Bit dumb now, was more exuberant." John Livingstone-Learmonth
2008-2022 12x75cl £618.00

2009

Hermitage Cuvée Emilie, Domaine des Remizières, Northern Rhône, France

Notes: "dark and shiny robe – promising. Has a near overripe black fruit aspect on the nose, is rather sultry and sunned-out, there is a spot of baking in the air – overall, it is a pretty deep bouquet. The palate has a close-knit constitution, a definite engine room of matter. There is a brisk grain in its fruit, and oak sides come along towards the finish. It is a touch wild, but I like the fresh notes near the end, and it holds good potential, and can get together. The juicy, licorice aftertaste also bodes well. Has crisp tannins. The oak can settle in. The best Émilie for some time, probably since 1999." John Livingstone-Learmonth
2015-2025 12x75cl £390.00

1998

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Monpertuis, Southern Rhône, France

Notes: "pure, good red; warm, rounded nose with good sap, is genuine, generous. A Redondo wine on the palate – has plenty of appealing, warm flavours – juicy garden fruits in an honest, quite hearty setting. Its end tannins, not too much of it, is well integrated. Good, chewy length after the fleshy start and middle. Good, steady evolution ahead." John Livingstone-Learmonth
2004-2014 12x75cl £240.00

2001

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de la Roquette, Southern Rhône, France

Notes: "Owned by the Brunier family (also proprietors of the famed Vieux-Telegraphe), Chateau La Roquette has fashioned a very good 2001. Revealing more structure than usual, this deep ruby-colored 2001 is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre. It exhibits wonderful sweetness, surprising tannic structure, and fragrant aromas of ground pepper, kirsch liqueur, licorice, and underbrush. Ripe, tannic, and medium to full-bodied, there are 10,000 cases of this fine effort." Robert Parker
2005-2014 12x75cl £312.00

1998

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vieux-Telegraphe, Southern Rhône, France

Notes: "the robe is fuller than the 2001 – it is a black plum with a wee top lightness. The bouquet is weighty and benefits from the air – it is soaked, with plum and a thorough, filling cold China tea air to it. The red fruit within is bright, and there is something of the Christmas cake in it. This is a serious wine on the palate – it is really full, a Big Operator that comes with a lot of scale, width, it is here, it is there – indeed it assaults the senses. Has a great texture, all en roundeur, and it is very long on the finale. Is not yet there for its complete harmony, even after 10 years: a big wine, the interest now is its character and very live nature. “It is just beginning to integrate and find some balance. There is more tannin and balance, more going on than with the 1990, “ Daniel Brunier. 2030-32 Nov 2008." John Livingstone-Learmonth

Riesling Sommerberg, Albert Boxler, Alsace, France

Notes: "The “basic” bottling of Boxler 2005 Riesling Sommerberg traditionally represents a blend of two parcels from distinct microclimates. Ripe apricot, lemon, high-toned herbal essences, and a hint of wood smoke in the nose lead to a juicy but relatively compact palate, with distinctly wet stone, saline, and pungently flinty mineral suggestions emerging in a finish of striking persistence and a sense of extract that leaves me chewing the air. This is as usual in complete contrast with the extroverted, effusively spicy, floral fruitiness and textural delicacy of the Brand. (The latter is granite underlain by limestone, whereas the Sommerberg is weathered granite over granite bedrock with mica intrusions.)" erobertparker.com
2006-2012 12x75cl £150.00

2003

Vouvray Cuvée Constance, Huët, Loire Valley, France

Notes: Offers a stunning array of date, quince paste, fig and persimmon aromas and flavors, with a laser of acidity carrying it all through an extremely lengthy finish. Just when you think it's all opulence, riveting acidity and a green tea hint flash on the finish, leaving a wonderfully elegant impression. Drink now through 2030. 330 cases made. 98/100. 2004

Catena Alta Malbec*, Bodegas Catena-Zapata, Mendoza, Argentina

Notes: "Dark black cherry colour, black core. Smoky meaty dark fruit, complex and inviting with a delicate violet component. Toasty spice but not overwhelmed by the oak though there are mocha notes. Very very fine-grained and silky tannins. Refreshing, elegant and long. More restrained than many and all the more delicious for that, though there is the underlying power and warmth that you would expect from this variety in this region. (This wine recently came overall top in a competition run in the UK to find the best Malbec to accompany meat.)" jancisrobinson.com

Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon*, Bodegas Catena-Zapata, Mendoza, Argentina

Notes: "The 2004 Alta Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced and blended from three vineyards with distinct terroirs and aged for 18 months in new French oak. It offers greater aromatic complexity with elements of pain grille, scorched earth, espresso, black currant, and blackberry liqueur. Medium-bodied, it has the elegance of a classified growth St.-Julien, with intense, spicy, cassis, mint, and black fruit flavors, superb balance, and a 45-second, pure finish. It will profit from 6-8 years of further cellaring and drink well through 2030." erobertparker.com

St Andrew's Shiraz*, Taylor's Wines, Clare Valley, Australia

Notes: "Medium red-purple; dark berry, spice and sweet oak aromas lead into a palate with excellent richness and concentration, basically at the savoury end of the spectrum. 2008

Pinot Noir, Kiltynane Estate, Yarra Valley, Australia

Notes: In the glass, this is a pale-mid cherry ruby colour. An interesting nose and a complex one. There are floral notes here, but also something like putty. Damp vegetation. Moist earth. Some dry spice: cardamom and even pepper. This is almost immediately fresh, the juiciness building, although never overcoming the fruit concentration and that fruit is crisp and red: cranberry and cherry. There's fractional tannin here, but it is almost invisible. The whole thing has a sort of orange-y acidity and pleasant, easy grip. Long and nicely energetic.

2nd day - Dry spice: coriander. There's a hint of lovage, pot pourri, with a citrus zestiness.

Barolo Monprivato*, Mascarello, Giuseppe e Figlio, Piemonte, Italy

Notes: "Mascarello’s 2004 Barolo Monprivato is an explosive wine with an almost Pinot-like expression of purity in its fruit. This round, sweet Barolo is extremely primary at this stage, with tons of dense fruit that almost cover the wine’s tannins completely. Subtle overtones of roses and tar develop in the glass, rounding out this majestic wine. Monprivato is one of the world’s very finest values in collectible, age-worthy wine, and the 2004 is another classic in the making. I was blown away by this wine’s sheer balance and harmony, both of which are remarkable considering the wine’s age. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034." erobertparker.com in October 2008

Barolo Rüncot†, Elio Grasso, Piemonte, Italy

Notes: "The 2001 Barolo Runcot is the darkest of these 2001 Barolos. It opens with a deeply spiced nose that is followed by intense sweet dark fruit and toasted oak flavors that are beautifully integrated in a sleek, elegant interpretation of Barolo from Monforte. Exquisitely well-balanced, this superb Barolo will be at its best in a few years and will provide great drinking to age 15, perhaps more. In 2001 the Runcot saw 40 days of maceration on the skins followed by 36 months of aging in 100% new oak barrels. That said, the 2001 signals a new level of maturity here as a reduction in toast levels has proven to be a good decision and this 2001 shows much greater clarity and definition than the 2000." Hugely rich and dense, with compelling sweetness and pliancy but also sound framing acidity. Extremely youthful and very long on the aftertaste. Finishes with suave but strong tannins and excellent grip and thrust.
