The Truth About Oops: The Whole Sad Tale
|
|
|
|
Our office super-girl Laura has been looking at our
stockholdings. It has quickly became apparent that,
over the last few years, there has been a modicum of
wine buying that has been, shall we say, under the
radar. And it has remained under the radar. Thus
Laura has identified bits and pieces of stock that
are homeless, adrift, thus-far unloved.
And there are other cases of this and that - wines we
offered months or, in some cases, years ago - of
which we had remnant stock that subsequently fell out
of sight and was thereafter overlooked.
|
|
It has now been made quite plain to me that I should
get on and thrust these wines forward into the light
of public view, which is what Oops is all about. Here
is the list:

| 2008 |
Chablis Terroirs de Courgis, Patrick Piuze, Chablis, Burgundy, France
Notes: This is a wine we sold masses of some time ago. It was an odd one. We were offered it by the importer (who happens to be a friend of ours) and it came with a story attached.
The wine had never been cold stabilised and on its journey to the UK it somewhere must have become rather chilly as the bottles contain an impressive quantity of "wine diamonds": floating tartaric acid crystals. I went on to explain that these crystals are entirley harmless and thaht the wine itself was superb.
And personally speaking, I thought we'd sold the lot. Indeed, it went like hot cakes on an especially chilly February mornign in Spitzbergen. Yet Laura has managed to find two cases. Help yourself! It's superb Chablis at a crcazy price.

Ladoix Blanc, Château de Corton-André, Burgundy, France
Notes: "An expressive nose of straw, orchard fruit and floral notes merges into rich, full and generous flavors that are frank and direct though not elegant, all wrapped in an attractively dry if not especially complex finish. Correct." The Burghound

| 2009 |
Puligny-Montrachet Les Trezins, François et Antoine Jobard, Burgundy, France
Notes: "This is notably more floral with notes of acacia and citrus blossom that are liberally sprinkled with wet stone notes. The detailed, pure and refined middle weight flavors possess plenty of verve as well as dry extract that confer a textured mouth feel onto the classy finish. This is not quite as complex as the Barre but it is finer and this too is recommended." The Burghound

| 2007 |
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles., Morey-Coffinet, Burgundy, France
Notes: Very senior terroir in this vineyard. Youngish vines here, with which Morey-Coffinet make a superb white. I could find my tasting note if I had a couple of hours to rummage through assorted books, but I fear I do not have the time at the moment.

Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru, Follin-Arbelet, Burgundy, France
Notes: "Very clear and fresh and with great integrity. Such savoury freshness! Lively and readable and confident. Really racy and excellent." Jancis Robinson

2014-2023 |
6x75cl |
£775.00 |
|
| 2007 |
Le Corton Grand Cru, Bonneau du Martray, Burgundy, France
Notes: "This is notably ripe with cassis, red and blue pinot fruit and touches of animale and earth, both of which are reflected by the concentrated, serious and detailed flavors that possess excellent volume, power and muscle, all wrapped in a long if moderately austere finish. As Morinière noted, this is very Corton yet admirably elegant and pure." The Burghound

| 2007 |
Bandol Cuvée Classique, Domaine Tempier, Bandol, France
Notes: As in the southern Rhône, 2007 was a stunning vintage for Bandol. This is the home of the Mourvèdre variety, here producing some of the finest and longest-living wines made anywhere. And it is criminal that they are not better known. (The upside, of course, is that they offer tremendous value to the cognoscenti!)
N.B. Again, I could dig out my tasting notes if I had a couple of hours to spare.

This is probably my favourite of Tempier's fine range. 100% Mourvèdre.
N.B. Again, I could dig out my tasting notes if I had a couple of hours to spare.

Bandol Rosé, Domaine Tempier, France
Notes: These are some of the longest-living and finest pink wines to be found anywhere. I say "pink" but relaly these are more what's known as onion skin in colour.
Please don't drink this stuff too cold.

Barbaresco Rabaja, Cascina Luisin, Italy
Notes: "A stunning Rabaja matured for 30 months in botti, it has a rich, well defined, classic Barberesco nose with soft, sumptuous red-berried fruit, dried herbs, singed leather and dried orange peel. The palate is rounded and opulent, beautifully balance with seamless tannins, leading to a corpulent, cashmere finish with touches of iodine. Utterly seductive and beautifully crafted." Loibner Ried Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Trocken, Emmerich Knoll, Austria
