The Producer
|
|
Lucien Camus took over his family estate in 1971 and
works a leash of 1er Cru vineyards – Gravains,
Lavières and Narbantons – as well as
three Village plantings, plus vines in the Beaune 1er
Cru Clos du Roi and Les Arvelets in Pommard. Most are
planted with very old vines. Lucien produces among
the very best wines of Savigny-lès-Beaune.

|
Savigny’s one of those villages in Burgundy
that is slightly off the beaten track, not quite on
the maps of the visiting wine tourists. This is,
perhaps, a shame for those who produce wine here, but
the consumer (at least the consumer wanting to spend
smart money) reaps the benefit, as communes like
these are the source of superb value
burgundies.
|
|
Lucien’s wines have an extraordinary colour
when one visits the domaine to taste the wines from
barrel. They are mauve, the cherry ruby being lit by
a blue-ish cast.

I cannot understand why we find it hard to shift
burgundy at this level. I get the impression that
clients would rather spend twice this amount on Pinot
Noir from Oregon or Central Otago and be satisfied
with tasty, ripe Pinot Noir, rather than buy a pile
of this stuff at extraordinarily reasonable prices,
keep it for a few years and then enjoy it with the
abandon of someone who has secured a rock-solid
bargain and a wine full of Burgundian terroir to
boot. Am I missing something? It’s just that I
am starting to find it a bit frustrating...
