2010

Pommard, Joseph Voillot, Burgundy, France

Notes: A lovely nose and a really floral one, exhibiting fruit both red and black, majoring on cherry. This is cool and both richer and denser than the village Volnay tasted immediately before. The palate offers these beautifully rich and integrated tannins that thread through to the very long finish, full of grip. Really juicy, crunchy wine showing old vine concentration to its depth.
2015-2022 12x75cl £234.00

2010

Volnay 1er Cru les Champans, Joseph Voillot, Burgundy, France

Notes: Black and crunchy-fresh aromas meet the taster. Aromas are good and dense and nuanced by scents of both smoke and spice. The palate's entry is cool and black and wonderfully supple. Flavours are really very special indeed and the tannins here are upright and grippy. A dark wine and one showing abundant limestone minerality.
2016-2024 12x75cl £366.00

2010

Pommard 1er Cru les Pezerolles, Joseph Voillot, Burgundy, France

Notes: As ever, this is of stand-out interest. Fruit is black and loaded with spice and smoke aromas, as well as something slightly medicinal: mint or menthol. Plus there's a slightly roasted note. Entry is lithe and supple and black fruited. Finish is quite strict at the moment: relaly linear. Pezerolles soil shines through in the pronounced minerality. I'll say it again: this is a terroir vintage. Very juicy grip and an after-taste of black plums. Superior terroir and a clearly superior wine!
2018-2026 6x75cl £219.00

2010

Pommard 1er Cru les Rugiens, Joseph Voillot, Burgundy, France

Notes: For sheer elegance, this is pick of the bunch at this address. Aromas are floral, of limestone and the most beautiful red fruit: red currrants strewn with rose petals. A wonderful liqueur for the taster's nose! Cherries. The palate is foremost slightly creamy, quickly becoming fresher and more compact. There's a limestone minerality and a busy freshness. Very long indeed and juicy fresh. Lovely red fruit on after-taste. Straight and lively wine and a great success in a great vintage.

2010

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Bouchard Père et Fils, Burgundy, France

Notes:

The nose is really rather muted by the wine's youth, yet this smells dense, nutty and a touch wheaten. The palate is really rich, very dense, showing some nutty wood. And it is straight as a razor and coats the mouth with mineral dust. There's a lemon blade of freshness and minerality that runs throughout this. Super-long and mighty impressive.

"...Racy and dense and juicy. Lots of energy here. Much livelier than many Corton-Charlemagnes. Impressive! Still chewy but with real energy." Jancis Robinson

2018-2028 6x75cl £480.00

2010

Monthélie Les Champs Fulliot, Bouchard Père et Fils, Burgundy, France

Notes: A lovely nutty nose to this; rich and quite broad, of black cherry, all a touch smoky. The palate is loaded with fine, nutty, tacky tannins. Very long in the mouth, with juicy grip to the pure, black cherry fruit. Super finish makes this extra-special value.

"...Fine grained but quite firm, with generous fruit and a savoury finish plus a touch of oak spice." jancisrobinson.com
2016-2023 12x75cl £225.00

2010

Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières, Bouchard Père et Fils, Burgundy, France

Notes: The red and black fruit aromas contrive to be a touch meaty. And there are grilled smoky-bacon notes, too. Palate is lush, concentrated and pure, both red and black, largely of cherry. The fruit is supported by rich, fine, grippy, lively tannins. This is long, mineral, grippy...and lovely.

"...Dark fruits, licorice and crushed stone on the nose and palate, plus a whiff of ginger. Juicy and energetic, with good shape and grip to the spicy middle palate..." Stephen Tanzer
2017-2025 12x75cl £246.00

2010

Beaune Grèves 1er Cru Vigne de l'Enfent Jésus, Bouchard Père et Fils, Burgundy, France

Notes: The nose here a red and black fruited cream: strawberry and sloe. The palate is plush with a hint of liquorice. It's a touch creamy across the tongue, too. This is a charmer! There's a core of spicy, grippy, piquant tannin and the finish is very long: zippy, juicy and lively. Made to make you go Mmmmm.

"...Sappy, energetic wine with lovely underlying minerality. Finishes crisp and vital, with fine-grained tannins and very good length. Nicely showcases its light soil." Stephen Tanzer
2017-2027 6x75cl £321.00

2010

Le Corton Grand Cru, Bouchard Père et Fils, Burgundy, France

Notes: Nose here is a black plum and bramble cream, plus scents of smoke and singed gingerbread crust. Goes into the mouth big, rich and plush. This is both highly mineral and very juicy. Super long wine showing great energy and a lovely, intense, mineral finish. This really is excellent Corton.

"...Extremely fine tannins – almost chalky they are so fine grained. Very dry yet smooth and fresh. Excellent length." jancisrobinson.com

Meursault Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Buisson-Charles, Burgundy, France

Notes: Delightfully cool nose of easy density and giving off aromas of nuts and white fruits. Dense and rich and vital. Pear and pepper flavours. This is super-long and utterly lovely.
2013-2018 12x75cl £273.00

2010

Meursault 1er Cru Les Bouchères, Domaine Buisson-Charles, Burgundy, France

Notes: N.B. The vines here are 67 years of age. Nose a little nuty here; smoky and complex, with a hint of mint. Mighty rich in the mouth, yet the acidity within is really firm from the off. Really intense and mineral wine. Incisive. This coats one's tongue with very piquant, powdered, spicy minerals.
2016-2022 12x75cl £450.00

2010

Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes, Domaine Buisson-Charles, Burgundy, France

Notes: Great density to the colour in the glass. One's nose is met by densely concentrated fruit aromas that are nutty, showing wisps of lime and honey. The palate is dense (is there a theme here?!?), almost chewy-rich, with the thread of the vintage's freshness woven through it. There's great weight here, but no heaviness. A keeper and a delight. Mighty impressive Meursault.

Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Grands Liards, Camus-Bruchon, Burgundy, France

Notes: The nose here a lovely ripe purity of cherry liqueur, with hints of cola. Very cool, red cherry entry. An elegant and refined Savigny this. Then it picks up Savigny piquant tannins and big zippy grip. A touch peppery, but altogether fabulous.
2015-2022 12x75cl £180.00

2010

Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Gravains, Camus-Bruchon, Burgundy, France

Notes: A little meaty the aromas of black plum, bramble and black pepper. Into the mouth and one is met by a lovely cool liqueur of an entry. This is richly tannic, those tannins upright. This is very busy and structured. Super-nutty and long.

2010

Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre, William Fèvre, Burgundy, France

Notes:

Quite shy, this youthful nose, butu what aroamns are present are lemon-fresh, a touch herbal-leafy. The palate combines wonderful energy, with a rich concentration. Zippy stuff. A really stony wine, straight, mineral and absolutely delicious; cool, becoming grippy and compact. It's also very, very long. As ever, this is top 1er Cru.

"A wonderfully elegant and highly expressive nose consists of white flower, oyster shell and iodine aromas that are very much in keeping with the powerful yet refined broad-scaled flavors that possess both excellent volume and concentration, all wrapped in an explosive and gorgeously long finish. The combination of punch and civility is most beguiling." Burghound

2014-2022 6x75cl £144.00

2010

Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux, Patrick Piuze, Burgundy, France

Notes:

Les Butteaux appears to be closed for business on first taste. However as the wine opens, it reveals delicate nuanced fruit tones, a hint of herb and that briney scent so typical of the wines of this region. In short, the nose here is incredibly beguiling. The palate is dense and busy and seriously intense, but it is still a clenched ball waiting to unfurl. Wonderful acidity and a brisk mineral edge will see this wine age splendidly.

"An appealingly layered nose of white flowers, lime, oyster shell and mineral reduction complements well the textured, intense and mouth coating flavors that possess overt power and muscle on the impressively concentrated finish. This is almost painfully intense and delivers positively huge length. One to look for." Burghound

2016-2023 6x75cl £132.00

2010

Chablis Grand Cru Valmur, Patrick Piuze, Burgundy, France

Notes:

An invigorating and complex nose to this beautiful Grand Cru. Certainly, some of the aromas are floral ones. And there are herbal notes woven right through. And then the palate sweeps one along on a wave of vibrant mineral extract and golden fruits and spice right through to the extraordinarily long finish. The ending is operatic: busy, complex and super-intense. A great classic Chablis, no doubt.

"A ripe and gorgeously complex, clean and dense nose of classic cool green fruit, white flower, lemon and plenty of Chablis character merges seamlessly with intense, mineral-inflected and highly energetic flavors that exude a fine dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine on the immensely long and equally complex finish. Like the Blanchots, this is a
textbook, not to mention breathtakingly good, example of a fine Valmur. Buy it." Burghound

2010

Nuits-St-Georges Les Lavières, Jean Chauvenet, Burgundy, France

Notes: Lovely pure black cherry tang to the nose here. Something a touch medicinal in a wisp of menthol that comes along with the fruit. Super-cool palate; controlled and with fine, tacky tannins throughout. It gains in grip and intensity along its straight length. Lovely busy finish. Intense and excellent.
2016-2023 12x75cl £225.00

2010

Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Rue de Chaux, Jean Chauvenet, Burgundy, France

Notes: Unexpectedly, the nose here comes across as really rather broad and creamy, almost a touch jammy. It's a phase thing, I would guess. Entry is rich and fluid with a core of grippy, stony minerals. Spicy drive. Very crisp length. Rich and full and really solid at the super-long ending.
2017-2027 12x75cl £372.00

2010

Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains, Jean Chauvenet, Burgundy, France

Notes: Very fresh nose of crunchy-ripe, black fruits including blackcurrants. A smoky note. This is really dense and very fresh and rich. A complete wine. There are rich and fine tannins along its length, which amounts to a great thrust of a shape. Highly controlled and mineral and very, very long with juicy grip.

2010

St Aubin 1er Cru En Monceau, Marc Colin, Burgundy, France

Notes: Nose a vivid amalgam of lemon and crushed rocks, plus spiced pears. This is really concentrated and quickly becomes mineral. Pears and spiced, rocky minerality. This finishes with a burst of pepper and will be superb.
2014-2018 12x75cl £204.00

2010

Santenay Champ Claude Vieilles Vignes, Marc Colin, Burgundy, France

Notes: This is a bit shy at the moment, but evidently very fresh and gives up aromas of red domestic fruits and red apples. The palate is fresh from the off, the fruit all about strawberry and cherry, underpinned by earthy minerals. This gains in high, peppery spice. Very long. Serious Santenay (as one might expect with a vineyard of 110 summers).

2010

Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, Drouhin-Laroze, Burgundy, France

Notes: The nose is a bit youthfully shy, but I succeeded in coaxing lightly spiced, pure black fruit aromas by jiggling it around in the glass. It's the palate that lights one's blue touch paper. It is fresh righht the way through; a lovely juicy wine of fine shape. This is long and highly elegant, with beautifullly fresh grip. Very long. And very good!
2019-2030 6x75cl £306.00

2010

Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, Drouhin-Laroze, Burgundy, France

Notes: This is really pretty closed at the moment, although if I squint my taste buds I can discern floral, very fresh, beautiful fruits, both red and black. There's a real firmness of structure to this and right from the front. This is compact in its youth and really direct, with clear and pure fruit. It gains in very fine tannin along its considerable length. WAIT!!
2022-2040 6x75cl £360.00

2010

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Drouhin-Laroze, Burgundy, France

Notes: There's a suspicion of dark chocolate to the black cherry fruit. And the palate comes across elegant and reasonably domesticated until about half way through when the wildness kicks in. A long and juicy and very black wine, with a very juicy ending. Lovely.
2021-2037 6x75cl £360.00

2010

Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, Drouhin-Laroze, Burgundy, France

Notes: There's a superior cake-like density about the nose here and I could identify black cherry and plum and spices. This is rich and cool; a highly structured wine giving a juicy plum palate. Very mineral. Hang on! This is simply huge, yet light on its feet at the same time. Great drive to this, plus big grip. Fabulous.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Rouges, Jean Grivot, Burgundy, France

Notes: N.B. Vines here are 40+ years of age. A lovely nose of lovely fruit, ripe and red and black, of  cherry. There's a hint of liquorice and other drier spices. This enters the mouth supple, almost creamy. Altogether the palate is very straight and consistent. The fruit caches perfectly the wine's acidity. Very fine tannins to the seamless, lovey Vosne.
2018-2028 6x75cl £327.00

2010

Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Roncières, Jean Grivot, Burgundy, France

Notes: N.B. This is a very well-drained site abutting Les Pruliers. Super-clean nose of red and black fruits. Really floral. Cherry, with touches of smoked spice. Supple-rich and cool entry and very lovely flavours. Very straight wine, showing a very fine, chalky minerality. Cached acidity all the way through this. Very long and very lovely.

2010

Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots, Jean Grivot, Burgundy, France

Notes: As usual, there's a touch of cassis here. This is almost creamy, but fresh and with some quite big structure. Cherry and cassis, all a little smoky. Complete and balanced and mouthcoating, with lovely busy grip. Great wine and very senior Nuits.

Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 1er Cru Clos St Jean, Paul Pillot, Burgundy, France

Notes: A lovely nose, a touch creamy, of fruit both red and blue. Hints of spice hem aromas of cherry and liquorice. The palate is also a llittle creamy. This is quite delicious: knit, complete and quite forward. Blue and red fruits again predominate. Sandy, rocky minerals. Elegant and fresh and delicious.
2015-2021 12x75cl £234.00

2010

St Aubin 1er Cru Pitangerets, Paul Pillot, Burgundy, France

Notes: Ripely citrus nose giving off orangy notes. There's a lovely tension here. Acidity is lemon and I found flavours of oranges. There's a blade-like thrust to this highly mineral wine. And, once emptied, the glass remains very stony smelling. Impressive, terroir-laden wine.
2013-2016 12x75cl £174.00

2010

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets, Paul Pillot, Burgundy, France

Notes: A complex nose, chalky, with a hint of caramel to the fruit of russet apples. There are herbal notes too. The palate is fresh from the front and the fruit is welll controlled. Rocks and lemons. There's great thrust here; fine lift and minerality. Super-long wine from this senior Chassagne terroir.

Bourgogne Blanc La Tuféra, Etienne Sauzet, Burgundy, France

Notes: Nose is quite shy in its youthfulness, yet light, delicious pear aromas emerge when one agitates the wine. Palate says it all, however. This is rich and fabulously fresh. Flavours are of spiceed pears and there's a firm core of 2010 structure. Very juicy wine with really incisive grip at the back. Serious white burgundy as ever...
2013-2015 12x75cl £126.00

2010

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain, Etienne Sauzet, Burgundy, France

Notes: N.B. Vines here are 64 years old. Aromas are of ripe citrus fruits: lemon and lime. There's a hint of aniseed and something I can only describe as yellow cherries. Creamy-rich palate offering more citrus, but towards the tangerine end of the spectrum. This is also very, very mineral, but those minerals are super-fine. Very, very long wine from its zippy entry to its structured, mineral finish.
2014-2017 6x75cl £234.00

2010

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne, Etienne Sauzet, Burgundy, France

Notes: Very mineral nose: wisp of gunflint. Smoke and dried flowers, with a hint of nut. Palate is dense and highly mineral, of granulated rocks and lemon fruit. Very, very long wine and a really busy one. Serious faceful of terroir here.
2014-2017 6x75cl £261.00

2010

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet, Etienne Sauzet, Burgundy, France

Notes: This is a really nutty wine: there's a noisette aroma to the fruit of yellow cherries and lemon. The minerals on the palate come across as fine and rocky. This is dense and solid and highly controlled. Very long and with impressive density at the fiinish.
