You’ve read about it. Or maybe you haven’t. In any event, there’s been a wealth of chatter you might have missed because you’ve been working far too hard. General gist? The 2021 vintage is pathetically small. Ravaged by meteorological mayhem (principally a severe frost), volumes are a fraction of what is produced in an average harvest.
And prices have swollen to make up for this shortfall. The good news is that delicious wines have been produced: wines focused, wines transparent and fresh; wines of purity. And the wines from the less familiar appellations are better than ever.
Imagine being a child and never being invited to other kids’ parties for the elementary reason that no one could pronounce your name. Thus has Pernand-Vergelesses sulked in its cleft behind the Hill of Corton since time immemorial, somewhat off the beaten tourist track, but longing to join the other Côte de Beaune communes for an energetic game of pass the parcel.
There are other villages in Burgundy that have suffered a similar fate over the years. Savigny-lès-Beaune (long ago developing a reputation for producing rather agricultural wines); Chorey-lès-Beaune (wrong side of the tracks); anything south of Chassagne-Montrachet (is there anything south of Chassagne-Montrachet?!? (Helpful hint: yes, very much so)).
