2021 Burgundy - Domaine Bachelet Monnot

Those who know the wines of Dézize-lès-Maranges-based Bachelet brothers, Marc and Alex, display distinct symptoms of devotion to these electrically incisive white wines and reds which are as expressive and delicious as many a liquid to be found a great deal further to the north.

For their white wines, Marc and Alex employ a pre-ox method in which wine is fermented from highly oxidised (i.e. brown) juice. Post-fermentation, the wines are as pale and bright as any young white burgundy can be and, having already oxidised, are inherently more stable. Indeed, the white wines here from bottom to top are remarkably age worthy. I have enjoyed the Bourgogne Blanc at seven years of age and in a perfect state of maturity.

Those who started buying Bachelet-Monnot wines a decade and more ago may feel aggrieved at price rises that have affected not just this domaine but the entire region. However, when one considers that, poured blind, the Bourgogne Blanc could easily be mistaken for a top-notch village Puligny-Montrachet and the village Puligny for a top 1er cru from a senior producer, one realises that these wines are, without doubt, worthy of their tickets.

***The wines of this domine are much in-demand, especially the whites. Preference will be afforded to those buying the Bachelet-Monnot reds alongside the whites. Quantities are limited!***

2021 Bourgogne Côte d'Or, Bachelet-Monnot
£126 in bond per 6  Drink 2024-2028

This is a wine we buy every vintage. We are currently drinking the 2018 with enormous satisfaction. It is still young, but very, very delicious.

2021 Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Blanc, Bachelet-Monnot
£168 in bond per 6  Drink 2025-2029

Another wine we lay down in every vintage. The limestone in the soils brings a delightful fresh tension to the wine.

2021 Puligny Montrachet, Bachelet-Monnot
£312 in bond per 6  Drink 2025-2032

This is an excellent, citrus-driven Puligny.Neal Martin

2021 Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Rouge, Bachelet-Monnot
£162 in bond per 6  2025-2035

Those limestone soils add an elegance and definition to what is a very fine red burgundy.

2021 Maranges 1er Cru Clos de la Boutière Rouge, Bachelet-Monnot
£162 in bond per 6  Drink 2026-2038

The Clos de la Boutière vineyard is more on clay, thus the wine in bottle is dark, dense and deep: an altogether more masculine thing.
