Alexandra Pascal makes wines we very much admire. Why? Well, they are flavoursome and characterful and do not rely on oak for nuance, majoring instead on the personality of terroir. They are also remarkable values in a region beset by ever-expanding tickets.
2019 Bourgogne Blanc Joseph, Domaine Jean Pascal
£69 in bond per 6
This smells simply delicious in the glass, giving off scents of ripe melon and Golden Delicious apples as it does. It's a rich wine in the mouth, but shows superb tension and a sense of minerality to the freshly acidic core. It shows excellent sustain through the very long finish, dying with an earthy texture and that vibrant apple freshness. Linear and lovely.
2019 Puligny Montrachet, Domaine Jean Pascal
£180 in bond per 6
Pretty lime lights to the colour in the glass. Looks very good! Aromas are beautifully defined, of lemon and green orange and limestone, introducing some herbal aromas as it warms. There's a hit of wood in a wisp of hazelnut. This is richly fruited, bnut with real freshness beneath and shows very mineral grip. A nutty wine and that grip is sustained. This is even a touch backward. A sense of earth resides right through the finish and the ending is really juicy, full and very long. This is excellent.
2019 Puligny Montrachet Les Enseignères, Domaine Jean Pascal
£192 in bond per 6
This, too, has a touch of lime in its pale colour. And the nose is alive with flowers, both fresh and dried. Fruit is of ripe orange and peach, the whole thing coming across as nicely complex and delicious-smelling. There's very quick acid tension in the mouth behind pure spiced pear and small orange fruit. Then the juicy grip kicks in, full of mineral expression. And it sustains the juiciness right through the very long finish. Superb density here and the potential for further complexity. A stunner.
2019 Auxey Duresses Blanc, Domaine Jean Pascal
£114 in bond per 6
A lovely thing in the glass primes one for the fresh nose of lemon and green apple fruit complicated by aromas of camomile. This offers fabulous definition on the nose. The palate is all about the ripe melon and green apple fruit; ripe but well-structured right through. It's a touch backward and there's the merest hint of the wood. But this is direct and minerally fresh wine and it's very long. with a hint of nuttiness beneath. Super.
