Light and Dark: Top wines from Champagne and Spain

I've been taking up a number of wines that Bowes Wine has been offered in recent weeks and will be listing them over the coming weeks. 

We start 2022 with a pair of fascinating contrast. The first is a champagne that, in addition to the familiar triumvirate of Pinots Noir and Meunier, plus Chardonnay, also includes in its blend the "legacy" grapes Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau (this last known elsewhere as Pinot Gris). The seven varieties combine to offer an extraordinarily intense and wonderful champagne that can be enjoyed now or cellared with confidence.

The second is a high-altitude Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero: a wine that came out top in Tim Atkin MW's review of the wines of the region, being awarded 98 points; hardly surprising, since it emanates from the cellar of one of the country's greatest wine makers.

2014 Le Nombre d’Or Brut, Champagne Aubry

Pierre and Philippe Aubry are the latest in a line of wine growing Aubrys dating back to 1790. They work twelve hectares of vines made up of fifty separate parcels. It was in 1986 that the brothers decided to attempt to recreate the character of the 18th century in a special cuvée with which to celebrate the bicentenary of their business. Thus this unique wine had its inception.

We have sold a number of vintages of this wine and none have met with anything less than a rapturous reception from those who have secured some stock.

2018 Garmon, Bodega Garmon Continental

Garmon is the new venture of Mariano Garcia and his sons. Mariano was born at Vega Sicilia, the son of vineyard workers. By the time he was 24 he was head wine maker at the winery and went on to craft 30 vintages, only leaving after setting up the stunning Aalto winery. His projects also include Mauro and Maurodos.
