Those of you who do not keep a regular eye on wine trade happenings might have missed something of a hoo-ha in the press relating to the 2020 Burgundy vintage. By all accounts, it’s a doozy.
As is so often the case, the growing season was marked by heat, but in the case of 2020, the lofted mercury didn’t arrive until August and even then (and crucially) nights were cool.
And it’s that day-night temperature variation that goes a long way to informing the style of the wines. Cooler nights result in fresher wines and commentators have been fulsome in their praise of red and white wines displaying beautifully ripe fruit allied to great freshness.
I will end with the conclusion of Master of Wine Jasper Morris, who is based in the region and who writes extensively on Burgundy and its wines on his website, Burgundy Insider:
We have secured allocations of 2020 burgundy from the following producers:
> Bachelet-Monnot
> Bouchard Père et Fils
> Camus-Bruchon
> Lafarge-Vial
> Nicole Lamarche
> Georges Lignier
> Rollin Père et Fils
