English Wine

The wine grape Vitis vinifera grew wild in Britain in the warmer days when the land was still part of continental Europe, but it seems likely that the Romans brought their own vines with them. The main driver for wine production was its requirements for Christian worship (ale being the most widely consumed alcoholic beverage), thus monasteries planted their own vines but in 14th century the climate cooled and French imports became the main source of wine. Wine growing is now expanding in the UK, with a mass of new plantings in recent years; English wines are winning awards both at home and overseas.
