Sauvignon Blanc - Grape Variety

Sauvignon Blanc, darling of the wine bars and people who lunch...and pretty much everyone else with a thirst on a hot day looking for a crisp, aromatic white wine with flavours and aromas of citrus, herbs, grass and gooseberries. The origins of Sauvignon Blanc are almost certainly Bordelais and from there it spread to the satellite appellations and then onwards to the Loire, where the most celebrated mono-varietal Sauvignons are cultivated: Pouilly-Fumé, Sancerre, Reuilly, Quincy and Menetou-Salon. Its natural acidity is employed in Sémillon blends to counter that grape's propensity to flab. It has, of course, adapted very well to the New World, most notably Marlborough in New Zealand.
