There can be little doubt that Furmint's origins are Hungarian. First mention of the variety was as far back as the 16th century and the fact that there are differing forms of Furmint bearing the same DNA in Hungarian vineyards suggest that it has been present here for very many years. Furmint is the principal grape of the great sweet wines of Tokaji, the other being its progeny, Harslevelu. Furmint is a very high-quality grape, capable of producing intense, complex wines of great age-worthiness.
