Dolcetto - Grape Variety

Dolcetto is a very old variety of Piedmont in northern Italy. The name Dolcetto translates as "little sweet one" and refers to the apparent sweetness of the wine caused by the low acidity of the grape, rather than any sugar in the wine. It ripens a great deal earlier than its local peer varieties (Nebbiolo and Barbera) and is therefore planted on the higher and cooler sites of the region. Dolcetto produces a wine that is deeply coloured and often has a certain lushness to it; whilst most examples should be consumed early, others can be firmer and can last for five years plus.
