Feteasca Neagra is a dark-skinned red grape variety native to the Republic of Moldova and Romania, but it is now more widely planted in the latter as it largely disappeared from Moldova during the Soviet era. There are several distinct types of Feteasca which intimates that this is an old variety. Its name means "black lady" and it tends to produce wines of deep ruby-red colouring, with good spice and fruit character. As a variety, it is resistant to cold and drought, and ripens late. It is normally found as a mono-varietal wine nowadays although has in the past been blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
