Colombard - Grape Variety

Colombard is a white grape variety which comes from western-central France i.e. brandy country. It has been shown to be a crossing of Gouais Blanc and Chenin Blanc. Colombard is most famously used together with Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche in the production of cognac and armagnac. After a period in the popularity doldrums, it is now gaining in favour in California, and also back in western and south-west France. A high-yielding grape with the ability to retain freshness in hot arid conditions, it tends to produce fresh white wines, often with a light floral character.
