Barbera has its origins in northern Italy, probably Piedmont, and is today one of that region's principle grape varieties. The wines produced from Barbera can be light and fresh, or concentrated and age-worthy, depending on climate, soils and the age of the vineyard. One can however typically expect a wine of good colour, modest tannin and bright acidity, giving aromas and flavours of crunchy black and red fruits. The most famous examples of Barbera are Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba.
