2001 Château Brane Cantenac, Margaux

2001 Château Brane Cantenac, Margaux

Ref: 0100BORD
Red  |  Still  |  13% ABV

Wine has been grown on this spot since at least the early 1600s. Over time the name of the property has changed to reflect the name of its owners. In 1833 the estate - then known as Gorce-Guy after its owners the Gorce family - was bought by the Baron de Brane, who sold Brane-Mouton (later Mouton Rothschild) to raise funds for the purchase. The name was changed to Brane-Cantenac a short time later. After changing hands twice more (and spending time in the same stable as, variously, Châteaux Margaux, Giscours, Issan and Lagrange), the estate was taken over, in 1925, by a M Recapet, along with his son-in-law Francois Lurton. This 75 hectare property is still owned by the Lurton family today.

Tasting Notes

"The 2001 Brane-Cantenac has long been one of my favorite vintages from this era, and it actually surpasses its millennial counterpart. It has a fresh and joyful bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, gravel and cedar scents that seem to gain intensity with aeration. These aromatics demand attention! The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, a little more freshness and vibrancy than the more introverted 2000 Brane-Cantenac and a pert, lively, beautifully focused, pencil-lead-tinged finish. Very fine. This comes highly recommended." Neal Martin

Sweetness Explained
Sweetness Explained

Sweetness

All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.

Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
