The Foix Candale family owned this property in the mid-15th century, as well as Château d'Issan in Margaux. It was subsequent owners, the Dukes of Epernon, who insisted that boats passing on the estuary dipped their sails as they passed the property, giving rise to the chateau's name (Baisse Voile being French for "lower the sails"). It has since been through the hands of numerous owners, including the Guestier family who founded the company Barton & Guestier still extant today. In 2011 Beychevelle was sold to Suntory and Castel Frères.

"Despite the extreme heat of June, July and August, this beautiful wine’s terroir shows through. A dense plum/purple color is accompanied by sweet cassis and black currant aromas, broad, round, juicy fruit flavors, medium body, and hints of figs, spice box and cedar. This complete, juicy, fully mature, impressive wine can be consumed over the next 7-8 years." Robert Parker
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
