2018 Familia, Hatzidakis

2018 Familia, Hatzidakis

Ref: HATZ180
White  |  Still  |  14.3% ABV

Haridimos Hatzidakis was introduced to abandoned vineyards in Santorini in 1996 by Konstantina Chrysou, whose parents had left the island – and their vines – after the 1956 earthquake. Haridimos established his winery in 1998 and built the business, growing the vineyard area to something like 100 acres, most of which are organically farmed. Whilst building the business he was also building a huge reputation for Hatzidakis wines and for Assyrtiko, the grape on which his efforts focused.

Tasting Notes

"It was always their dream to produce wine from their family vineyards only – family includes her cousins and uncles, and they were willing to continue to sell to Constantina after Haridimos’s death. Vines in Pyrgos aged 15–80 years. Indigenous yeasts. Six months in tank before bottling. RS nearly 3 g/l, pH 3.11.
Pure citrus and beautifully intense and spicy, intense for 2018. Spicy and richly mineral. That little bit of sweetness helps to fill the mouth. Richer than many but no less minerality, and still that fine chalky texture giving a slight chew on the finish. Impressive length and more generosity than many 2018s I have tasted on this trip." Julia Harding MW

"The 2018 Santorini Familia has a sharp, precise bouquet of green apples and freshly cut pear, plus a faint whiff of sea spray. Maybe because it is a few months younger, that volcanic/basalt element is less pronounced. The beautifully balanced palate shows a fine line of acidity that feels a little stronger compared to the 2017 Cuvée 15 (though the crucial sense of tension and energy is intact) and displays excellent salinity on the finish. This is a superb wine that maintains the standard set by Haridimos Hatzidakis. I would give it a few months in bottle." Neal Martin

Sweetness Explained

Sweetness

All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.

Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
