2018 Camino de Santa Zita, Aseginolaza & Leunda

Ref: ASEG182
Red  |  Still  |  14.5% ABV

An exciting, if difficult to memorize and pronounce, new name in Navarra.Luis Gutierrez

Aseginolaza & Leunda are Jon and Pedro, two school friends from the Basque Country currently living in Navarra. They are environmental biologists but have become crazy about one thing: old vine Grenache! Once they have found ancient – and often forsaken – unirrigated, bush-vines, they set about rehabilitating the vineyard without recourse to either herbicides or to systemic pesticides. Their philosophy is equally simple: maximum respect for the environment combined with minimal intervention in the winery.

Tasting Notes

N.B. This is 100% Grenache from a vineyard covering 0.3 of a hectares, comprising two unirrigated terraces on calcareous clay soils at an altitude of 540 m.
Aromas here are dark and rooty with the black cherry fruit underscored by scents of walnut and the tang of plum skins. I can also find a welcome wisp of violet. This is very pure and dark and backward in the mouth, showing fruit of black cherry and plum. It’s a bigger wine than the Otsaka. It’s also very mineral. The tannic structure is bold and rich, though integrated and I found a hint of cedarwood on the very long finish. A more assertive – but no less beautiful – example. Bowes Wine original note

Sweetness Explained
Sweetness Explained

Sweetness

All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.

Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
