Counoise is one of the "Châteauneuf thirteen" (the thirteen grape varieties permitted in the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape) although there is a whisper that it might have originated in Spain. Plantings are diminishing in France where it is a dedicated southerner that is often blended with Aubun.
