In 1979 Christine and Dennis Canute purchased 40 acres of run-down vineyard on the white sand over clay country in the heart of the Barossa. Fortunately, the intention was to have something of a hobby farm, since Barossa fruit was commanding miserable prices throughout much of the '80s. From these lowly beginnings Rusden (a splicing of the names of owner Dennis Canute and his business partner Russell) has grown and they now crush 80 to 100 tonnes of fruit every vintage.

The colour is not inky, as one might expect. In fact, there's much about this wine that is individual. The nose is liqueur-like, a little biscuity, but mainly a delicious compote of red and black fruit and fruit cake. This is one interesting and complex nose. A day later and I found lots of smoke on the nose, plus barbecued beef and shiraz tar. There's something high-toned here, like red plum liqueur. The palate is rich and full of freshness. The fruit has a velvet texture and is stuffed with a mass of minerals. The medium acidity is well covered. I found red and black plum fruit as well as a cranberry note. On day two, the nose had developed and a medicinal, almost herbal aroma appeared: eucalyptus, maybe. Bowes Wine original note
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
