Examination of Silvaner's DNA and geographical history, it is thought that this variety is an ancient, natural cross between that Jura mainstay Savagnin (also known as Traminer) and an obscure local grape autochthonous to vineyards near Vienna. Thus it is assumed that its origins are Austrian. Silvaner has roots that are common to so many varieties grown today, in that both Pinot and Gouais Blanc appear in its family tree. At its finest, Silvaner (Sylvaner in France) produces dry wines that can be earthy/herbal in character and have real concentration, if not the greatest freshness.
