The family of Alvaro Palacios own a celebrated estate in Rioja called Palacios Remondo: a good place to start a long career in wine making! A two year stint at Petrus set Alvaro up for a business making fine Spanish wines from old vines using modern techniques. As he had been in Priorat, Alvaro Palacios was at the forefront of burgeoning activity in Bierzo, here joined by his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios. Securing established vineyards on some of the best soils of Bierzo, Palacios (under the label Descendientes de J. Palacios) began producing super-fine wines from the Mencia grape. They are still the main flag-wavers for this exciting region.

Mencia is one of those grapes – along with Malbec and Syrah/Shiraz – that can show a great deal of reduction in their youth. And such is the case here. At this stage, there is a distinct whiff of smoky rubber, suggesting that a period of a few hours in a decanter would be advisable should you want to drink it young. Better yet, give this a few years in bottle to experience the full majesty of which Bierzo and its native red grape are capable. There’s that delicious scent of dark chocolate-inflected black fruits - plum and bramble – common to the variety, with a singed note hovering above. This is a medium-full example, a wine of great flesh and drive, with vim and energy in its structure. The dark plums become spiced in the mouth. And what length! This manages to be both elegant and assertive, lush and structured. It’s a very fine thing, no doubt.
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
