Clementina Cossetti is the fourth-generation winemaker in the heart of Asti, where her family has been farming for well over a century. ?It was in 1891 that Giovanni Cossetti first built a winery, and his son Clemente began achieving wider renown for their wines in the early years of the twentieth century. Within the current vineyards where vines are on average 30-years-old, the yields are kept low and historically Barbera has performed exceptionally. The Cossetti family prioritise this and also make fabulous bottlings of more obscure local Piemontese varieties like Ruchè, Grignolino and Albarossa.

Deep thing in the glass, this, and still with an unexpected hint of purple in the colour. Aromas are crisp and fresh, albeit dark and there's a touch of chocolate to the dark plum fruit, along with something that reminded me of pot pourri. Is there some oak here? It goes in the mouth cool and plush: smooth is a word I hate when it comes to wine, but this is, indeed, smooth. The tannin is cached but really supportive within the delicious domestic fruit that nods towards blackcurrant. Really fresh acidity underpins everything. This is a very long and fresh and densely structured wine, finishing on a sapid, dark, domestic fruit flavour. Grips long. Lovely stuff. Bowes Wine original note
