A truly memorable Barolo from this rising star, Davide Fregonese, in the great commune of Serralunga d'Alba. Together with winemaker Davide Rosso, he is making wines which equal the wines of his illustrious neighbours but (currently) at a fraction of the price.
And this vintage, widely considered a landmark vintage for Piedmont, offers the perfect opportunity to be introduced to his wines.
When I first tasted the 2021 Barolo Prapo, it wine stayed with me long after I had left the tasting... It will undoubtedly offer scintillating drinking in the years to come and Davide Fregonese is someone to watch.

“This is quite different from the Ceretta from the same address. Aromas are all on dark cherry, blueberry and orange peel. There is a complication from a scent like clean undergrowth and there are herbs wound around that orange note. The palate offers instant freshness. This is direct and loaded with assertive - but integrated – tannin that remains contained throughout. This is super long in the mouth and there is a juicy firmness in the core of the grip. Just awe-inspiring Barolo!” My note
"Dark plums and blackberries unfold with remarkable depth and purity. The wine reveals layers of violets and morning glories, softly floating above savory notes of white pepper and crushed fennel seed. A distinctive saline mineral character weaves throughout, adding complexity and intrigue. Here is Prapo showing its signature gentle side of Serralunga - immediately appealing yet built for the long haul. The tannins embrace like silk but maintain just enough structure to promise longevity, while bright acidity provides lift and energy through the finish. A masterful expression that offers both immediate pleasure and the promise of graceful aging.” Jeff Porter in The Wine Enthusiast
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
