The Mighty Vega

N.B. I need a pretty instant response about these wines: by (very) early next week at the latest.
Please let me know ASAP if they're of interest.

On 12th December last year I attended a tasting in St James's. It's an annual invitation and one that one would find rather hard to rebuff, for deep in a subterranean cellar one gets to sample the new releases of the mighty Vega Sicilia i.e. perhaps Spain's finest wines.

And I have, of course, been meaning to bring them to Bowes Wine clients, since I receive an annual allocation of these brilliant liquids. And now Spanish cooking pot needs to be switched from the back burner to the front, since the UK agent of Vega Sicilia is demanding a firm order pronto.

Ergo, this offering.

The wines are brilliant. If top Spanish red is what you're after, look no further.

The Wines
2012 Pintia, Toro
£156 in bond per 6  Drink 2019-26

A lovely nose: very dark, of pot pourri and pure bramble fruit, all a touch creamy. This is a rich wine in the mouth and a richly tannic one. Tannins gain incisive bite through the not inconsiderable length. This is nicely fresh at the core, however. It's a layered wine of excellent assertive grip at the back. Bold and delicious.

2013 Macan Clasico, Rioja, Benjamin Rothschild & Vega Sicilia
£129 in bond per 6  Drink 2018-25

This offers aromas of mild chocolate oak and rich red fruits, which are attractively creamy. It goes into the mouth creamy, too, with a silky texture right up to the moment the tannin appears. The tannin is fine, but overall the structure suggests another year in bottle will bring everything together. There's mineral freshness at the core of this. A lasting, fresh and tasty wine.

2013 Macan, Rioja, Benjamin Rothschild & Vega Sicilia
£213 in bond per 6  Drink 2019-29

The nose is a fascinatingly complex melange of creamy red fruit and citrus aromas, especially ripe oranges. Plus there's something rather floral about it. This is a cool, medium-weight wine and there's a touch of creaminess to the blue fruit flavours. Very straight through the palate, becoming grippy/nutty and building to a really fresh finish. This is choc-full of mineral interest. And there's something orange/citrus about the acidity. Very long and lovely wine.

2013 Alion, Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia
£231 in bond per 6  Drink 2019-26

Very deeply coloured wine. There's a milk chocolate wood note above the rich red and black creamy fruit. A degree of fruitcake spice about this. Palate is medium weight and cool and really nutty with the upright, tacky tannins. Mineral grip swells throughout this to a very juicy finish. The ending is big, fresh and incisive. This isn't a massive blockbuster, but it has fabulous intensity at the death.

2012 Valbuena, Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia
£222 in bond per 3  Drink 2021-35

A scent of fresh oranges allies itself to a smoky wisp hanging over the lightly creamy plum fruit. There's a hint of chocolate wood about this. Then it goes in the mouth all plush and brambly, gaining quickly in upright, incisive tannin that becomes tacky. This is a nicely fresh and juicy wine and a direct one. The finish is really busy and filled with mineral structure. There's a great dart of purpose at the back. Superb.

2005 Unico, Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia
£552 in bond per 3  Drink 2020-35

I have so little of this that I am not even going to reproduce my tasting note. Interested parties - please contact me.
