The latest offerings from Italian wine legend Miani

Enzo Pontoni from Miani

This is Enzo Pontoni. He looks like a rock star. He could be Charlie Watts's brother. And, indeed, for those cognoscenti of Italian wines, this guy is the real deal: a true rock star...if, by "rock", one is referring to the soil and sub-soil of the vineyards he knows so intimately.

And Enzo is properly obsessed. He's obsessed with his vineyards in which he spends most of his time; he's obsessed with his wines, only allowing liquids he considers to be perfect to leave his cellar bearing a Miani label. (I have consumed utterly fabulous Friuli wines - indeed have bought utterly fabulous Friuli wines - that turn out to be rejects from Miani, bottled by someone else under a different label. Other people's fabulous is just not good enough for Signor Pontoni.

I have to fess up. I have not yet tasted these wines. And yet I am buying them and offering them with the utmost confidence. As I say, if they've passed the Miani quality control checks, I am happy.

Quotes from wine critics

"There are few properties anywhere in the world I look forward to visiting more than Miani. Proprietor Enzo Pontoni continues to turn out riveting wines." Antonio Galloni

"Sadly the wines remain nearly impossible to find, even in Italy...For those lucky enough to find them, these remain some of Italy’s finest wines." Antonio Galloni (again)

"Pontoni represents the finest of the artisanal approach to winemaking and his meticulous, some would say fanatical, devotion to his old-vine plots is legendary.Antonio Galloni

"Do whatever you can to snag a bottle of the Zitelle, it is quite simply one of the best Italian white wines ever made." Ian d'Agata (talking about the 2016 Sauivgnon Zitelle)

"Think of the greatest, most concentrated Merlot-based wines of Pomerol and you’ve got a good analog for what the reclusive Enzo Pontoni does with his reds at Miani." Ian Cauble, Master Sommelier
