Agiorgitiko - Grape Variety

Agiorgitiko can be grown successfully in hot climates. Depending on the source of one's information, it is either the most widely, or second most widely, planted red variety in Greece. It is often planted in dry, infertile soils, thereby concentrating fruit sugars in the grapes. The wine produced by Agiorgitiko varies enormously according to how much the vineyard is permitted to yield: low yields make for more serious, structured and intense wines whereas higher yields produce something less complicated but easy to enjoy. It is also known in English-speaking countries as St George.
