1990 Château Palmer, Margaux

The château of Palmer lies in the little village of Issan right by the main route up the Médoc. The vineyard was once a part of the vast Issan estate, but was divided by succession in 1748, when 50 hectares was handed down to the de Gascq family. In 1814 the property was sold to Major General Charles Palmer, an officer in Wellington's army. Having expended the vineyard area considerably, the general ran out of money and was forced to sell the property at a loss. The current owners - a syndicate of the Sichel, Ginestet, Mialhe and Mähler-Besse families - bought Palmer in 1938. It was classified third growth in 1855.

"Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, I confess that maybe I've been harsh towards the 1990 Château Palmer in the past, since it never quite matched the sublime 1989. However, this represents the finest bottle that I have encountered. The nose is complex with red cherries, allspice and sous-bois, tertiary scents developing as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine balance, not the most complex 1990 and not a patch on say Château Margaux 1990, yet there is precision here and a pleasant savory finish that maintains precision. I cannot envisage it improving further, but you would not throw your rattle out of the pram if a bottle landed on your table." Neal Martin
