2009 Château Giscours, Margaux

2009 Château Giscours, Margaux

Ref: BORD0933
Red  |  Still  |  14% ABV

There was a fortified property on this site in the early 14th century, but there are no records of wine growing here until the middle of the 16th. After the revolution Giscours was confiscated and sold to two Americans. Their tenure did not last for long and it was sold several times in quick succession. In the late 19th century Giscours was managed by a man called Pierre Skawinski who not only invented a kind of eponymous plough still in use today, but also pioneered the use of gravity in the winery. In the early 20th century the vineyard fell into ruin, but was rescued in the 1950s by Nicolas Tari. Investment continues apace today, with extensive replanting having been undertaken. The vineyard here now covers 102 hectares.

Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes

"The 2009 Giscours has a generous and complex bouquet with well defined blackberry, cedar, mocha and light ferrous notes, more like a Saint-Julien than Margaux. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, fresh and vibrant with curry leaf and graphite. A dash of white pepper pops up towards the finish. This is a very fine Giscours to enjoy over the next 15 to 20 years." Neal Martin

Sweetness Explained
Sweetness Explained

Sweetness

All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.

Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
