The vineyard is very steep. 50% is worked by horse. Soils are rose granite. The wines at this great Volnay estate are now made by Frédéric Lafarge, Michel's son. The domaine works around 10 hectares of vines biodynamically and produces among the finest wines in the Côte de Beaune. The cellars here are low-ceilinged, cobwebbed and there's very little evidence of new barrels (very few are employed). Yet the wines emanating from the old wood casks are as beautiful an expression of their individual grape varieties and terroirs as one could hope to encounter.

Nose is dense and beautiful, of red and crystallised blue fruits with hints of roses. The palate is cool and rich and full of mineral structure. Very direct wine that gathers itself into a great mineral thrust. Energetic; very, very long. Great vim and purpose here. "The 2016 Fleurie Joie de Palais was lucky to escape the hail that stopped 50 meters from Lafarge's parcel. It has a more earthy, stony bouquet with fine tension, the palate quite saline in the mouth and maybe not quite as detailed on the finish as the Chiroubles. It is an enjoyable Fleurie, although I discerned much more complexity within their Clos Vernay this year." Neal Martin
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
