Ducru Beaucaillou is right at the forefront of that exclusive group, the "super-seconds": those second growths properties that are nipping at the heels of the first growths in terms of their wine's quality. The Borie family bought Ducru in 1941 and also own Grand Puy Lacoste and, until recently, Haut Batailley. Vineyards here sit on deep banks of gravel deposited over the millennia by the actions of the Gironde. The second wine is called La Croix de Beaucaillou
A midnight, opaque and dense colour that presses at the glass. Very rich and dense, pure aromas. Touches that are floral, of liquorice, frame the fresh fruit of plum, blackcurrant. There's a creaminess, an uplifting tang, then a hint of chocolate. Very cool in the mouth; really subtle. Very mineral, too, with a super-ripe and dense structure. This almost bristles with intensity. Long and crunchy; very, very long, in fact. Very busy at the end. There's that floral aspect to the pure blackcurrant fruit. Grippy stuff and highly impressive. Bowes Wine original note
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
