Vines were first planted on the area of gravel soils named Lafitte in the Graves region to the south of Bordeaux in the 14th century. In the 18th century the property was bought by a George Smith, who added his surname to the name of the estate. The Cathiards bought the property in 1990 and have undertaken substantial renovation. Serious investment has pushed Smith Haut Lafitte to the top of the Pessac-Léognan hierarchy.

There's a distinct aroma of lovage here i.e. something curried. Celery and touches of toast, along with a delightful lemon purity. Elderflower and pine needles. I like this a lot. The curry theme returns on a palate which is richly concentrated and straight; long and controlled. Minerals are fine and dusty and mouth coating. Peppery length. This really makes a statement. Big and serious wine.
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
