Vega Sicilia was the brainchild of Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who arrived in Spain from Bordeaux in the mid-19th century. With him, he brought Bordelais grape varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec - and created vineyards from them, as well as Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo). This impeccably run winery has changed hands several times over the years and since 1982 has been owned by the Alvarez family. And they have started working beyond the boundaries of Ribera del Duero in Toro (Pintia) and with a joint venture with the Rothschilds in Rioja (Macan).

The nose is rich and plus, redolent of dark plums and chocolate. And the entry is all chocolate and plum, too, before the rich, fine and integrated tannins kick in and plunge forwards, finally becoming drily mineral. This is a long wine, with a dense push through. Very long and the grip at the back is pretty intense. Fully structured finish here. Superb example. Bowes Wine original note
"It's a serious, modern and nicely crafted Tempranillo with a touch of sweet spices and smoke. It should continue evolving nicely in bottle." Luis Gutierrez
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
