Cantemerle originally formed part of the defensive fortifications of the Gironde, which lies half-a-mile from the property. It wasn't until the 16th century that wine production became the main business of the estate, when the feudal system was dropped and owners of properties were not longer subjected to tithes and rents. In 1980 Cantemerle was sold to SMA, a French insurance company, beginning a period of renovation, innovation and expansion of the area under vine. Cantemerle was classified a fifth growth in 1855.

Blue-black colour. There's a hint of violet to the floral plum fruit. There's a note of dried fruit, too. This is one juicy and complete Cantemerle. Really intense and very long. It's the finish that sets the tone here: full and rich and very long. Best Cantemerle for years. Bowes Wine orignal note
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
