2009 Château Grand Puy Lacoste, Pauillac

A vineyard was initially planted here in the 16th century. In the 18th century the property was owned by a family called Dejean, who also owned Lynch Bages next door. A part of their vineyard was sold off to a M Ducasse and became known as Grand Puy Ducasse, thye rest becoming the basis for Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste. The Dejean family, however, marketed the wine under the name Grand Puy Saint Guiron, the name Lacoste surplanting Saint Guiron when one of the Dejean girls married a M Lacoste. For much of the 20th century, Grand Puy Lacoste was owned by the sybaritic Raymond Dupin, until his death in 1978, when the chateau and vineyard became the property of the Borie family, owners of Ducru Beacaillou and erstwhile proprietors of Châteaux Caronne Ste Gemme and Haut Batailley.

N.B. This is 80% Cab Sauv, 18% Merlot and 2% Cab Franc A very narrow band at the rim to this black/purple, midnight-hued wine Complex nose of flowers, liquorice, rocks and a touch of the wood to the pure blackcurrant fruit. This is very, very cool and very, very lovely. Floral berry fruit meets the taster, followed by rich, well integrated tannin. This is one long, elegant and subtle wine; very, very cool, fresh and pure. There's fine, easy grip and it gains great juiciness at the end. Miineral, already complex. Best GPL for some years.
