As the name suggests, this property was original a priory, the vineyard worked by monks producing wine for religious ceremonies. In the late 18th century and secularisation, parts of the vineyard were sold off piece-meal to surrounding chateaux. In 1951 this property and nearby Château Lascombes were bought by Alexis Lichine, an English wine merchant and writer. At that stage Prieuré-Lichine was very unkempt and was sold for a measly sum. With financial aid from Count Lr Slauces of Château d'Yquem, Lichine managed to refurbish the vineyard, adding parcels throughout the Margaux commune, until the surface area rose to 58 hectares. In 1999 Prieuré-Lchine was sold to the successful negociant firm Groupe Ballande for £20M.

"The 2009 Prieuré-Lichine was one of the pleasant surprises of this blind tasting, a Margaux that has improved in recent years. It has a superb, very Pauillac bouquet with graphite infused black fruit that is very well defined and neatly integrated with the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, very well balanced with quite saline and very persistent finish. Superb." Neal Martin
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
