2020 Vilana Queen, Lyrarakis

2020 Vilana Queen, Lyrarakis

Ref: LYRA240
White  |  Still  |  12.5% ABV

Lyrarakis is the family name of brothers Manolis and Sotiris, who established the winery on the island of Crete, Greece in 1966. Today, Lyrarakis Wines is run by the second-generation winemakers, supported by an extended family of skilled professionals. From the very beginning, they have devoted themselves to the revival of rare grape varieties of Crete; their portfolio features more than 11 indigenous varieties, with three saved from extinction.

As sustainability advocates, Lyrarakis transitioned to organic viticulture in 2020 and a significant percentage of their co-operating farmers managed to do the same. As part of their regenerative approach, they have stopped ploughing the ground and only use their own fertilizer made of organic waste from their kitchen, the winemaking process, and the nearby oil mills. Adapting to climate change, they have been moving to higher altitudes and replacing their trellising to the lyre system, among other measures.

Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes

"Citrus, fresh herbs and green fruits, very slightly floral but not really perfumed. Also a hint of something stony/mineral. Relatively light-bodied with a gentle texture from the skin contact. Refreshing, benchmark Vilana made in quite a complex way to produce a relatively easy but far from simple wine. As you taste, this builds in the mouth and becomes more powerful. Surprisingly long finish and should go well with food even though you could drink this on its own if you want something quite dry as an aperitif." Julia Harding MW

Sweetness Explained
Sweetness Explained

Sweetness

All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.

Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
