One of the most important producers in the commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vincent Avril of Clos des Papes still resolutely makes but two wines, a red and a white (plus a little Petit Vin d'Avril, a Vin de France). It is also one of the few domaines to grow and employ all thirteen grape varieties. Very low yields are the norm here. A "gold standard estate", according to John Livingstone-Learmonth. For style, Vincent Avril looks north and his love of the wines of Burgundy.

How can a wine that is analytically so similar to another taste so very different? Both the 2004 and 2003 Clos des Papes are just over 15% alcohol and have similar levels of acidity and yet this is less sumptuous than its immediate antecedent, with more apparent structure and focus. Which is better? Horses (again!) for courses, but it will be fascinating to compare the two in the years to come. Bowes Wine original note
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
