Sassicaia (meaning stony field) was the creation of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta who planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the Tuscan coastal region of Bolgheri in 1948. For twenty years the wine from this vineyard was reserved for the family to enjoy, but Mario's son Nicolò and nephew Piero Antinori convinced him to offer a commercial release of the '68 vintage. Hiring the celebrated consultant Giacomo Tachis took tyhe wine to greater heights of quality and the wine rapidly became a global icon.

"The 2003 Bolgheri Sassicaia is full of unexpected twists and turns. Oddly enough, this vintage offered more overall freshness and balance than the much-celebrated 2004 edition...The bouquet opens to dried cassis or red currant with eucalyptus, cola, grilled rosemary and medicinal herb. The tannins are silky and fully integrated within the wine's thick textural richness...this is an impressive effort overall that shows impressive stability considering the challenges of the growing season." Monica Larner
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
