1998 Château Beau Séjour Bécot, St Emilion

Today the BSB vineyard amounts to 20 hectares, but it has had a chequered history. Once part of the larger Beau-Séjour estate succession led to it being divided between two children. One married a M Duffau-Lagarosse and that surname was duly appended to that estate. The other half was purchased in 1924 by Doctor Jean Fagouet, becoming Beau-Séjour-Fagouet. Michel Becot, whose family had lived in the area since the 18th century, bought up bits and pieces of BSF to add to his owned property, Château La Carte, eventually changing its name to BSB. This year (2018) Michel Rolland retires from consulting at BSB after many years, with Thomas Duclos chosen as his successor.

"The colour is more youthful than either the 1995 or 1996 and the nose certainly more vibrant: cranberry and strawberry fruit, fine purity and well integrated oak. There is a sense of purpose about these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fine cohesion and plenty of melted red berry fruit laced with tobacco, allspice and white pepper. In the context of this vertical, I see this 1998 as a benchmark – not the greatest ever, but a sign of things to come. Tasted at the château." Neal Martin
