2024 Galatrona, Petrolo

2024 Galatrona, Petrolo

Ref: PETR241
Red  |  Still  |  14% ABV

Petrolo is a family-owned estate of just 26 hectares in the hills of the Val d'Arno, east of Chianti Classico. The estate has a history dating back to the 1700s, but it was in the 1990s that Petrolo established itself among the leading names of the Tuscan wine renaissance. Petrolo has also taken an increasingly natural approach to viticulture, farming organically and using dry farming, grassing and minimal intervention to encourage balance in the vineyard.

As for Galatrona... There are Italian wines that are famous, and then there are wines that are known by people who really know Italian wine. We believe Galatrona is firmly in the latter category.

First produced in 1994, Petrolo's Galatrona has established itself as one of Italy's great expressions of Merlot: prompted by a conversation between friends - Luca Sanjust and Denis Durantou (Château L’Eglise-Clinet) - it now shines as a single-vineyard wine that hails from the Tuscan revolution of the 1990s and has quietly built a cult following of its own.

It sits in the same conversation as Masseto and L'Apparita (and indeed France's great Merlots that inspired them): wines that demonstrated that Tuscany could produce world-class Merlot with an identity entirely of its own. And unlike some of the more obvious names in the category, Galatrona remains comparably under the radar.

Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes

"The 2024 Galatrona (100% Merlot) is a seriously beautiful, vivid wine. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, mint and espresso are all laced together in the glass. Just bottled, the 2024 is very expressive. I can’t remember a Galatrona with this much class. Harvest took place from September 2 to 9. The 2024 spent 18 months in French oak, 30% new. This is so refined." Antonio Galloni

Sweetness Explained

Sweetness

All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.

Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
